The BU Madrid office is not able to assist students with any visa issues that arise while in Spain.<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-start=\"56\" data-end=\"247\">Students must arrive in Spain with the appropriate visa. Students who arrive without a valid visa will <strong data-start=\"159\" data-end=\"197\">not be permitted to attend classes<\/strong> until proper immigration status has been secured.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p data-start=\"56\" data-end=\"247\">U.S. citizens may remain in Spain (or the Schengen Area) for up to 90 days without a visa; remaining beyond this period is illegal and requires departure from the Schengen Area.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Students who do not have American or EU passports and want to travel outside the Schengen zone must check the entry requirements of their destination country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Students with EU passports must obtain a <a href=\"https:\/\/sede.policia.gob.es\/portalCiudadano\/_en\/tramites_extranjeria_tramite_certificadoregistro_ciudadanoue.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Certificate of Registration as a European Union Citizen <\/a>within three months from the date of entry into Spain.<br \/>\nThis document certifies the registration in the Central Register of Foreigners of citizens of a European Union Member State to reside in Spain for more than 3 months.<a href=\"https:\/\/travel-europe.europa.eu\/ees\/what-is-the-ees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/travel-europe.europa.eu\/ees\/what-is-the-ees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>Entry\/Exit System (EES)<\/span><\/a><\/h4>\n<p><span>The Entry\/Exit System (EES) is an automated IT system for registering non-EU nationals travelling for a short stay, each time they cross the external borders of many of the European countries using the system.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For the purpose of the EES, \u2018<strong>non-EU national<\/strong>\u2019 means a traveller not holding the nationality of any European Union country or the nationality of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland.<\/li>\n<li>\u2018<strong>Short stay<\/strong>\u2019 means up to<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>90 days within any 180-day period<\/strong>. This period is calculated as a single period for all the European countries using the EES.<\/li>\n<li data-testid=\"67b7d3b6-2a5e-485f-8f0f-59e6d9d5d8d6\" class=\"ecl-u-type-heading-2 ltr ecl-u-type-align-left\">If you arrive at a border crossing point for the first time since the EES started,\n<ul>\n<li>You will have to provide your personal data. Passport control officers will<span>\u00a0<\/span><a data-testid=\"navLink\" class=\"ecl-link\" href=\"https:\/\/travel-europe.europa.eu\/ees\/faq#which-biometric-identifiers-will-ees-store\">take a photo of your face and\/or scan your fingerprints<\/a>.
