{"id":23557,"date":"2025-03-10T00:24:01","date_gmt":"2025-03-10T04:24:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/madrid\/?page_id=23557"},"modified":"2025-09-03T08:39:49","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T12:39:49","slug":"internship","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/madrid\/academic-programs\/internship\/","title":{"rendered":"Madrid Internship"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Madrid Internship\u00a0Program\u00a0is designed for those students who are looking to gain experience working abroad in one of Europe\u2019s most vibrant, cosmopolitan cities.<\/h4>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students who participate in an internship will be able to hone their language skills while having the unique opportunity to experience true cultural immersion within Madrid\u2019s professional community.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HUB SA 330: Study Abroad Internship Course<\/h4>\n<p>Hub Area: The Individual in Community<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Taken in tandem with a work placement, the course allows students to gain a greater understanding of workplace culture within the host country. It provides a framework to explore and reflect on the professional and cultural practices observed in the\u00a0<span class=\"il\">internship<\/span>. The course and placement form an intercultural learning experience in which students can examine socio-cultural differences, beliefs and values while immersed in a diverse organizational and professional community. Through class sessions and assignments, students address the ways in which culture influences both work and learning. <strong>This course fulfills a single unit in the following BU <span class=\"il\">Hub<\/span>\u00a0area: The Individual in Community.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<h6><span style=\"color: #808080;\">*Students will be enrolled concurrently in the non-credit <span class=\"termHighlighted\">HUB<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"termHighlighted\">SA<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"termHighlighted\">330<\/span>\u00a0Study Abroad Internship unit through which they will, on successful completion of the concurrent 4-credit academic internship course, earn 1\u00a0<span class=\"termHighlighted\">Hub<\/span>\u00a0Unit in the area of \u2018The Individual in Community\u2019.\u00a0 The course\u00a0<span class=\"termHighlighted\">HUB<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"termHighlighted\">SA<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"termHighlighted\">330<\/span> does not award credit, but rather modifies the learning outcomes to facilitate the goals of the Individual in Community unit. Students will see two entries on their transcripts: one for the <span class=\"termHighlighted\">HUB<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"termHighlighted\">SA<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"termHighlighted\">330<\/span>\u00a0Study Abroad Internship (0 credits, 1 IIC\u00a0<span class=\"termHighlighted\">Hub<\/span> unit) and the other for the credit-bearing internship course (4 credits, course code dependent on the field of specialization in which the students complete their internship).<\/span><\/h6>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong><span>Course numbers depend on the fields of specialization in which the students complete their internship and the nature of the internship work. The following course numbers are open to students who complete an internship in Spanish:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>CAS AH 505 Internship in the Arts\/Architecture<\/li>\n<li>CAS EC 497 Internship in Business\/Economics<\/li>\n<li>CAS PO 401 Internship in Politics<\/li>\n<li>CAS PO 403 Internship in Comparative Law<\/li>\n<li>CAS PO 405\/IR 455 Internship in International Organizations<\/li>\n<li>CAS PS 495 Internship in Health and Human Services<\/li>\n<li>COM CM 471 Internship in Advertising\/Public Relations<\/li>\n<li>COM FT 493\/494 Internship in Film\/Television<\/li>\n<li>COM JO 412 Internship in Journalism<\/li>\n<li>CAS CS 219 Internship in Information Technology<\/li>\n<li>SHA HF 390 Field Placement in Hospitality Administration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul><\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>This program consists of:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>An internship (16-20 hours) along with the <strong>academic internship seminar\u00a0<\/strong>(4.0 credits)<\/li>\n<li>Three additional courses from those offered through either:\n<ul>\n<li>The Spanish and European Studies Program (<em>Instituto Internacional<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li>The Madrid University Studies Program (<em>UAM, spring only<\/em>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>*Students should note that attendance at the internship itself is mandatory. While your final grade will be determined by your academic work in the class, your performance at your internship will be also taken into consideration.<\/p>\n<p>**The internship, completed in Spanish, counts towards the Spanish major, but <strong>not<\/strong> the minor. As always, students are encouraged to check with the Spanish department regarding major\/minor credit, as the dept. has the final word.<\/p>\n<p>***Students from other programs (i.e. Madrid Spanish &amp; European Studies) <b>cannot <\/b>choose to switch into the internship program once the term in Madrid has begun.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Students may also opt to fulfill additional Hub units by completing the following:<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hub\/specialty-courses\/study-abroad-the-hub\/the-individual-in-community-with-study-abroad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HUB SA 230 The Individual in Community with Study Abroad<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hub\/specialty-courses\/study-abroad-the-hub\/global-citizenship-and-intercultural-literacy-with-study-abroad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HUB SA 225 Global Citizenship and Intercultural Literacy with Study Abroad<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Undergraduate students who study abroad can fulfill a single Hub requirement in The Individual in Community (IIC) or Global Citizenship and Intercultural Literacy (GCIL). No course enrollment is required.
