\nBurgos<\/h4>
<\/p>\nFor one of the program\u2019s possible overnight trips, the group will visit Burgos<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n
Burgos, a city with many monuments including but not limited to the Cathedral of Santa Mar\u00eda (an exponent of the Gothic architecture declared World Heritage by UNESCO), the Monasterio de Santa Mar\u00eda la Real de Las Huelgas, and the Cartuja de Miraflores. In addition, the Way of St. James (El Camino de Santiago<\/em>) crosses through the city, another World Heritage Site, and is located less than 15 km. from the archaeological site of Atapuerca, also under the protection of UNESCO since 2000. The Museum of Human Evolution exposes the most significant fossils found in the site. In addition to visiting all these sites,\u00a0BU students will also have the opportunity to visit the Burgos Castle.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nC\u00e1ceres<\/h4>
<\/span><\/p>\nFor one of the program\u2019s possible overnight trips, the group will visit C\u00e1ceres<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n
The old quarter of C\u00e1ceres was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986. It is one of the most complete and best-conserved town centers in Europe. The city wall divides its space into two main areas. Inside the city walls, we find the lion\u2019s share of the best known buildings from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, such as the Cathedral of Santa Mar\u00eda, the Palacio de las Veletas, the palaces of the Golfines, la Casa del Sol or the Bujaco Tower.<\/p>\n
The origin of the city and of its old quarter goes back to 34 B.C., the year in which the Roman Norbona Caesarina in C\u00e1ceres was founded. Many places and monuments you can see now in the old quarter were built in the XIII Century, and which were at their peak during the Catholic Monarch’s era, fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.<\/p>\n

\nCartagena<\/h4>
<\/p>\nFor one of the program\u2019s possible overnight trips, the group will visit Cartagena<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n
Cartagena is a port city and naval base that’s known for its many archaeological sites, including the Roman Theatre. Students will get the opportunity to see and learn about these sites, in addition to the history of the Mediterranean and Cartagena’s fishing industry.<\/span><\/p>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n
\nC\u00f3rdoba<\/h4>
<\/span><\/p>\nFor one of the program\u2019s possible overnight trips, the group will visit C\u00f3rdoba<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n
An Iberian and Roman city in ancient times, C\u00f3rdoba was a capital of the Islamic caliphate and one of the largest cities and cultural centers in the world during the Middle Ages.\u00a0 C\u00f3rdoba is home to the magnificent 10th Century Mezquita, a mosque later turned into a cathedral, which is an impressive mix of Muslim and Gothic art.<\/p>\n
BU students will have the opportunity to visit the Mezquita as well as Alc\u00e1zar of C\u00f3rdoba with its beautiful gardens and attend a flamenco show.<\/span><\/p>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n
\nEl Escorial<\/h4>
<\/span><\/p>\nFor one of the program\u2019s possible daytrips, the group will visit San Lorenzo de El Escorial<\/strong><\/a>, a quaint town where a monastery and palace, also named San Lorenzo de El Escorial, are located.<\/p>\n
King Felipe II had the grand structure built to commemorate the 1557 Spanish victory at the Battle of St. Quentin against Henry II of France.\u00a0 The Royal Pantheon at El Escorial is the burial site for most of the Spanish royalty for the last five centuries. The Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1931, and in 1984 was recognised by UNESCO as a\u00a0<\/span>World Heritage.<\/p>\n
Nearby, the group travels to El Valle de Cuelgamuros<\/a><\/strong>, built by dictator Francisco Franco as a monument to honor and bury those who fell during the Spanish Civil War and named Valle de los Ca\u00eddos. He was buried there for nearly 44 years.<\/p>\n
The monument took approximately nineteen years to complete and was built in large part by Republican political prisoners who worked as forced prison labour, and<\/span>\u00a0holds the remains of 33,847 war victims, of whom more than 12,000 are unidentified.<\/span><\/p>\n
Law 20\/2022 changes the name of the monument, which is now entitled the Valle de Cuelgamuros<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n
<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n
\nM\u00e1laga<\/h4>
<\/span><\/p>\nFor one of the program\u2019s possible overnight trips, the group will visit M\u00e1laga<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n
M\u00e1laga’s history spans about 2,800 years, making it one of the oldest cities in the world.\u00a0According to most scholars, it was founded around 770\u00a0<\/span>BC by the Phoenicians\u00a0as\u00a0Malaka.\u00a0<\/sup>From the 6th century\u00a0<\/span>BC the city was under the hegemony of Ancient Carthage\u00a0and from 218\u00a0<\/span>BC, it was ruled by the Roman Republic and then empire as Malaca (in Latin). After the fall of the empire and the end of Visigothic rule, it was under Islamic rule \u00a0for 800 years, but in 1487, the Crown of Castille gained control after the Reconquista.\u00a0The archaeological remains and monuments from the Phoenician, Roman, Arabic and Christian eras make the historic center of the city an “open museum.\u00a8<\/p>\n
The painter and sculptor\u00a0Pablo Picasso, Hebrew poet and Jewish philosopher\u00a0Solomon Ibn Gabirol\u00a0and the actor\u00a0Antonio Banderas\u00a0were born in M\u00e1laga.<\/p>\n

\nMurcia<\/h4>
<\/p>\nFor one of the program\u2019s possible overnight trips, the group will visit Murcia<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n
The city of Murcia is an ideal destination for walking while discovering its monuments, museums, and places,\u00a0 enjoying streets, squares and the traditional gastronomy of Murcia, based on the high quality of its fresh products, typical of the Murcian orchard such as vegetables. Its fish, meat and wines with the region’s denomination of origin, of great international prestige, also stand out.<\/p>\n
