{"id":61,"date":"2015-03-11T11:57:58","date_gmt":"2015-03-11T15:57:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/macs\/?page_id=61"},"modified":"2016-03-21T12:27:30","modified_gmt":"2016-03-21T16:27:30","slug":"outreach-education","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/macs\/outreach-education\/","title":{"rendered":"Outreach &#038; Education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The project outreach\u00a0goals are to introduce technology professionals to cybersecurity and its central role for our society and economy, and, to introduce K-12 students \u00a0(from under-represented minorities and students with exceptional academic potential) to cybersecurity, and through it to computer science in general.<\/p>\n<p>To achieve these goals, the project is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Developing and offering Crypto PROMYS for Teachers (Crypto PfT), an immersive summer training program for high-school teachers in the greater Boston Area. The project is also training a pipeline of teachers to sustain Crypto PfT beyond the 5-year period of the project.<\/li>\n<li>Developing and offering a new year-long research internship program for high-school students at BU fashioned after the <a href=\"http:\/\/web.mit.edu\/primes\">Program for Research in Mathematics, Engineering, and Science for High School Students (PRIMES) at MIT<\/a> and focused on cybersecurity applications. The project is also connecting this program with Art for Engineering Mathematics &amp; Science (ARTEMiS) and Women\u2019s Technology Program (WTP) which would act as feeders into CS PRIMES.<\/li>\n<li>Developing 16 on-line modules (lectures, labs, and assessment) on the edX platform to be incorporated into existing cybersecurity offerings at BU, MIT, NEU, and UConn; and integrating these modules into a single online professional certification program to be launched by the fifth year of the project.<\/li>\n<li>Developing and offering a special outreach program to under-represented minorities in the Holyoke (middle) school system. The program features content for use by teachers ahead of a one-day camp at the MGHPCC facilities, in which students learn by doing. The project is also training teachers to sustain this program.<\/li>\n<li>Posting videos of an MIT computer systems security course on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLA6Ht2dJt3SLQmKhygx8HfwV_hxuPPCea\">YouTube<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, principal investigators continue to pursue existing activities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Curricular development of new courses and seminars at BU, MIT, NEU, and UConn.<\/li>\n<li>Participation in summer programs for high-school women and minorities.<\/li>\n<li>Support for REU projects and for internships for undergraduate research and training.<\/li>\n<li>Participation and engagement with standards bodies such as IETF, Open Stack, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Engagement with society and public policy forums through the Cloud Computing Caucus, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Organization of events targeting the general public such as Charles River Privacy Day, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Organization of bi-annual national workshop on cloud security.<\/li>\n<li>Participation in regional events like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cyberinfrastructure.org\/us\/ne\/future\/charrette2015.html\">Northeast Cyber Infrastructure workshop<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To see some of our lectures and other videos, please visit our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/macs\/videos\/\" title=\"Videos\">Videos Page<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The project outreach\u00a0goals are to introduce technology professionals to cybersecurity and its central role for our society and economy, and, to introduce K-12 students \u00a0(from under-represented minorities and students with exceptional academic potential) to cybersecurity, and through it to computer science in general.
