Linguistics courses

Students majoring in Linguistics will, through the 4 Linguistics courses required for the major (CAS LX 250 Introduction to Linguistics, LX 301 Phonetics & Phonology, LX 321 Syntax, LX 331 Semantics & Pragmatics), satisfy 8 of the BU Hub requirements:

Two additional Linguistics electives at or above the LX 300 level are also required. One course in Japanese Linguistics
, which can be satisfied by CAS LJ 410 or 510. CAS LJ 410counts for:

Japanese courses

Six courses in Japanese are required.

Options for those required courses include the following: LJ 250 Masterpieces of Japanese Literature in English translation, LJ 251 Modern Japanese Literature in English translation,CAS LJ 314 Classical Chinese 1 for students of East Asia, CAS LJ 316 Classical Japanese, CAS LJ 320 Conversational Japanese, and and LJ 386 Japanese Translation/Interpretation . If selected, those would satisfy the following Hub units:

    • Aesthetic exploration (LJ 250, 251, 260, 283, 314, 320, 350, 386, 388)
    • Historical consciousness (LJ 316, 386)
  • 4. Diversity, Civic Engagement, and Global Citizenship:

  • 5. Communication:
    • Writing-intensive (LJ 350, 386)
    • Oral and/or signed communication (LJ 304, 320, 322, 386)
