Rebecca Dufie Bonney at the Fifth International Conference on Heritage/Community Languages
Congrats to PhD student Rebecca Dufie Bonney who presented a paper titled “African Languages and the Expansion of Heritage Phonology Research” this past February in Los Angeles. She co-presented with Matthew Ajibade (Indiana University).
You can read a summary of her paper below:
This paper examines how African heritage languages, such as Yoruba and Akan, broaden our understanding of heritage phonology. Drawing on both perception and production data, the study demonstrates that phonological acquisition is contrast-dependent and highlights its theoretical significance as well as practical implications, including more targeted instructional approaches for heritage language learners.
