{"id":3552,"date":"2025-04-11T13:49:17","date_gmt":"2025-04-11T17:49:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/library\/?p=3552"},"modified":"2026-08-02T18:19:39","modified_gmt":"2026-08-02T22:19:39","slug":"textiles-tell-stories-highlights-bu-libraries-african-textiles-collection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/library\/2025\/04\/11\/textiles-tell-stories-highlights-bu-libraries-african-textiles-collection\/","title":{"rendered":"Textiles Tell Stories Highlights BU Libraries African Textiles Collection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BU Today featured the new Special Collections exhibition,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/library\/gotlieb-center\/exhibitions-from-the-gotlieb-center\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Textiles Tell Stories: Exploring the African Studies Library Collection<\/em><\/a>, and spoke with the<span>\u00a0African Studies librarians\u00a0<\/span><span>and<\/span><span>\u00a0faculty and scholars of BU\u2019s History of Art &amp; Architecture department who curated the exhibition of African textiles held at the BU Libraries.\u00a0<\/span><span>At the opening of this exhibition and its complementary community exhibit,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/library\/gotlieb-center\/exhibitions-from-the-gotlieb-center\/textiles-tell-our-stories-celebrating-the-bu-community\/\"><em>Textiles Tell OUR Stories<\/em><\/a>, BU students, faculty, staff lear<\/span><span>ned how symbolic, political, and ceremonial textiles have been used in Africa and continue to have significance today and celebrated in community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>From<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/articles\/2025\/african-textiles-collection-bu-libraries\/\">the feature story<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On a recent Wednesday evening, Mugar Memorial Library looked a little different.<\/p>\n<p>From the back of the library, beyond the rows of students silently studying, emanated the sound of African music and the aroma of plantains and jollof rice. Colorful textiles lined the walls, and the space was humming with BU community members.<\/p>\n<p>The occasion?
