Libraries have an excellent collection of both print and electronic resources on the history of Japan.\u00a0\u00a0 The collection primarily covers the Meiji era (1868) to the present with an emphasis on World War II and more recent history. \u00a0 Earlier Japanese history is also covered. \u00a0\u00a0 We also have a good collection on both Japanese-American history and the worldwide Japanese diaspora.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The collection is mostly in English but Japanese language books and journal articles are easily found by doing a BULS (Boston University Library Search) <a href=\"http:\/\/bu.edu\/library\">search<\/a> in the box on the main library page.<a rel=\"attachment wp-att-54712\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/library\/japanese-history\/modern-japan-3\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-54712\" title=\"Modern Japan: documents\" alt=\"Modern Japan: documents\" src=\"\/library\/files\/2013\/06\/modern-japan2.jpg\" height=\"173\" width=\"140\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To narrow your search to our print or e-books,\u00a0 please do an <a href=\"http:\/\/buprimo.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com:1701\/primo_library\/libweb\/action\/search.do?dscnt=1&amp;scp.scps=scope%3A%28BOSU%29%2Cscope%3A%28BU_OAI%29%2Cprimo_central_multiple_fe&amp;tab=default_tab&amp;dstmp=1371760138443&amp;vid=BU&amp;mode=Advanced&amp;fromLogin=true\">advanced search <\/a>on the B.U. library web page, using the subject phrase &#8220;Japan&#8211;history.&#8221;\u00a0 \ufeff\u00a0 This search will yield hundreds of titles but you can refine the search by adding terms, e.g., \tJapan &#8212; History &#8212; Tokugawa period, 1600-1868.   You can also use keywords, e.g., Nanjing, Hirohito, etc.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>Journal articles<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/search.ebscohost.com.ezproxy.bu.edu\/login.aspx?authtype=ip,uid&amp;profile=ehost&amp;defaultdb=hia\" title=\"Historical Abstracts\"><\/a><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-55035\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/library\/japanese-history\/full-page-fax-print\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-55035\" title=\"Full page fax print\" alt=\"Full page fax print\" src=\"\/library\/files\/2013\/06\/japanese-studies.jpg\" height=\"191\" width=\"120\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/search.ebscohost.com.ezproxy.bu.edu\/login.aspx?authtype=ip,uid&amp;profile=ehost&amp;defaultdb=hia\">Historical Abstracts<\/a><\/strong> (HA) is the pre-eminent index to historical literature (mostly journal articles).\u00a0\u00a0 Each entry contains an abstract, a citation source; many entries provide access to the\u00a0 full-text<strong>; <a href=\"http:\/\/search.ebscohost.com.ezproxy.bu.edu\/login.aspx?authtype=ip,uid&amp;profile=ehost&amp;defaultdb=ahl\">America: History and Life<\/a><\/strong> (<strong>AHL) <\/strong>will supply citations and some full-text \u00a0articles on Japanese-Americans.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jstor.org.ezproxy.bu.edu\/jstor\/\" title=\"JSTOR\">JSTOR<\/a> <\/strong>and <a href=\"http:\/\/muse.jhu.edu.ezproxy.bu.edu\/muse.html\">Project Muse<\/a> are full-text interdisciplinary databases which will \u00a0provide full-text articles on Japanese history, not found\u00a0the\u00a0HA and AHL databases.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Although this unique database covers scholarly literature from\u00a0 the vast expanse of Asia,\u00a0 the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/bmc.lib.umich.edu\/bas\/Search\/Advanced\">Bibliography of Asian Studies (BAS)<\/a> <\/strong>is also an excellent source for finding articles on Japanese history and the Japanese diaspora.\u00a0 The index provides access to many journals published in Japan but are not indexed elsewhere. \u00a0\u00a0 In addition, BAS indexes the contents of edited volumes, conference proceedings, anthologies, Festschriften and similar publications.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Please note: this database only cites materials written in English and European languages.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>Internet Sources<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A huge number of\u00a0 websites cover Japanese history but we are only including a few authoritative sites compiled by scholars of Japan.<\/p>\n<p>Compiled by Harvard librarians for use in Japanese history courses, this <a href=\"http:\/\/guides.library.harvard.edu\/content.php?pid=253676&amp;sid=2094214\"><strong>Research Guide for Modern Japanese History<\/strong><\/a> is a superb portal providing access to many freely-available digitized materials primarily published in English but also includes Japanese language materials and useful bibliographies.<\/p>\n<p>This Fordham University website contains a subset of texts derived from the three major online sourcebooks;\u00a0 the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fordham.edu\/Halsall\/eastasia\/eastasiasbook.asp#Japan%20as%20a%20World%20Power\"> Japan as a World Power<\/a> section has excellent links to primary English language\u00a0 literature on Japanese history.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-55724\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/library\/japanese-history\/japanese-american-museum-2\/\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-55732\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/library\/japanese-history\/janm-pavilionbldg-600px-2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-55761 alignleft\" title=\"JANM-PavilionBldg-600px1\" alt=\"JANM-PavilionBldg-600px1\" src=\"\/library\/files\/2013\/06\/JANM-PavilionBldg-600px11.jpg\" height=\"148\" width=\"170\" \/><\/a>The Japanese American National Museum\u00a0 posts\u00a0 the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.janm.org\/projects\/inrp\/index.htm\">International Nikkei Research Project<\/a> website  by providing a wide range of information on the Nikkei (people of Japanese ancestry)\u00a0\u00a0 including demographic information and chronologies on countries  with significant Nikkei populations, a chronological overview of  emigration from Japan, and directories of resources about the Nikkei.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.h-net.org\/~japan\/\">H-Japan<\/a> is an international electronic discussion group, providing scholars, graduate students and others, a daily forum to discuss Japanese history, culture, religion and society.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Book Collection The\u00a0 B.U.
