Finding Journal Articles

“Potentiating antibacterial activity by predictably enhancing endogenous microbial ROS production”
Search a Database
- Search for a relevant article in one of our Databases
- Link directly to the full text or locate the journal containing that article
- Databases are searchable archives of articles published worldwide in thousands of journals.
- Search for articles using keywords, author names, and other criteria unique to each database.
- Choose an database that matches your area of interest, consult the database descriptions or ask a Librarian to recommend one.
These examples demonstrate how much subject coverage and scope can vary between databases:
- Biological Abstracts
Indexes articles from over 4,000 research-oriented life science journals worldwide, providing comprehensive coverage of the life sciences journal literature. Includes links to articles in BU’s ejournal collections.
Indexes articles in 400 core and popular journals covering all the sciences. Not comprehensive for any one discipline. Includes direct links to full text articles and links to articles in BU’s ejournal collections.
- Web of Science
Indexes 17,000 journals including over 3,700 science and engineering journals from the Science Citation Index. Has the unique feature of tracking the citing relationships between articles by providing indexing not only for the articles themselves, but also for each article’s references. Provides links to articles in BU’s ejournal collections.
The result of your search is a list of journal articles. The elements of each item – i.e., the author(s), the title of the article, the name of the journal and its volume number, date, and page numbers – together form a citation. You will see links to the full text of articles (PDF or other full text or the link) or search the BU Libraries SEARCH using the article title.
Information by journal name is also reflected in BU Libraries Search. Check by the name of the journal that includes your article.
Journals in Storage
When BU Libraries Search indicates the volume you need is in storage, fill out a Storage Request Form online or in the library at one of the service desks. A copy of the article will be ready for pickup at the Circulation Desk by 4 PM on the following weekday.
Journals not at BU
Submit an Interlibrary Loan Request for articles not available on the Charles River Campus. The turnaround on articles varies from one day to three weeks. We choose the supplier according to the urgency of your need and the availability of the journal. There is no charge for this service.
Journals in Other Libraries
If time is a factor, you may opt to retrieve the article yourself from another library. Our membership in the Boston Library Consortium entitles you to in-house use of the collections at all 17 member libraries and onsite access to electronic resources not available remotely.
