The BU Libraries remember Solomon “Shlomo” Wiesel

February 16th, 2025

The Boston University Libraries remember Solomon “Shlomo” Wiesel on Sunday, the 18th of Shevat in the Jewish calendar (February 16), the 80th anniversary of his tragic passing at Buchenwald Concentration Camp. This father, husband, storekeeper and community activist in Sighet, Hungary, was 50 years old when he died in 1945–some 10 weeks before his son, Elie Wiesel, was liberated from Buchenwald.

In his 1986 acceptance speech for the Nobel Peace Prize, Boston University Professor Elie Wiesel declared: “Because if we forget, we are guilty, we are accomplices. We could not prevent their deaths the first time, but if we forget them, they will be killed a second time. And this time, it will be our responsibility.”

BU Special Collections invites all to remember Elie Wiesel’s father, dedicating good deeds and study to his lasting memory, and we welcome you to visit our extensive Elie Wiesel archive online in the BU Digital Library and in the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center Reading Room.
