Anthony Petro<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>is an associate professor in the Department of Religion and in the Women\u2019s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies Program, for which he serves as the Director of Graduate Studies. He received his Ph.D. in Religion\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>from<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Princeton University and MA from the University of Chicago. A first-generation college student, he is a<\/span><\/span>lso a<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>proud alum of Georgia State University in Atlanta. His teaching and research interests include religion and politics in the United States; religion,\u202fmedicine, and public health; and gender and sexuality studies. His first book,\u202f<\/span><\/span>After the Wrath of God: AIDS, Sexuality, and American Religion<\/span><\/span>\u202f(Oxford University Press, 2015), examined the history of religious responses to the HIV\/AIDS crisis in the United States. His\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>current<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>book project,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Provoking Religion: Sex, Art, and the Sacred\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>(under contract with Oxford University Press) looks at heated debates over controversial art to narrate the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>ongoing historical struggle to define the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>sacred\u2019s<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>relationship to the political in U.S. public culture.
