Borrowing Library Materials

Materials marked in the back of the book as Limited CirculationLibrary Use Only, or Non-Circulating must be used within the library; these include journals, looseleaf services, reference materials, and primary sources.

If you are looking to borrow an item that is on loan to someone else, or not on shelf, please see a staff member at the Fineman Circulation Desk, located on the second floor of the Law School Complex, or consult Books Not on Shelf?.

Reserve Collection

Reserve materials may be borrowed for three hours for use within the library.

Current BU Law students may borrow course reserve materials for use outside of the library (three hour loan period) and overnight. These course reserve items must be checked out within three hours of closing time and are due back to the library within one hour of opening.

All members of the BU community may borrow items from the circulating law treatise collections for an initial loan period of four weeks.

All circulating materials may be renewed unless requested by other patrons.

Renewals should be requested in person at the Fineman Circulation Desk. Please note heavily requested items cannot be renewed.

Circulating Collections

Renewals can be obtained in person at the Fineman Circulation Desk, through the My Account page at BU Libraries Search (sign-in required), or by phoning the circulation desk at (617) 353-3151- staff will need your BU ID number when you call.

Late Returns and Replacement Costs

Users who have overdue law material will receive email notices from library staff requesting the return of the material. If you receive an overdue notice from the library, please respond to it promptly. Materials returned to the law library within three weeks of an overdue notice are NOT subject to fines. Materials returned more than three weeks after the notice are subject to a minimum replacement charge of $130 per item (non-refundable after the library has ordered a replacement for the material).

Overdue reserve materials are requested back within a shorter period of time.

Please contact us immediately if you do not have the material listed in an overdue notice. Even if you are positive that the material was returned, our records still indicate that the material is checked out to you.

Users receive notices regarding overdue materials, materials requested by other patrons, responses to search and/or recall materials, and just before graduation as a reminder of currently checked out materials which should be returned to the library. Notices are delivered to your BU email from all BU libraries.

Please contact the library that sent the notice immediately if you do not have the material listed. Even if you are positive that the material was returned, library records still indicate that the material is checked out to you.
