
{"id":34683,"date":"2016-12-09T15:59:34","date_gmt":"2016-12-09T20:59:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/?page_id=34683"},"modified":"2026-03-24T12:20:52","modified_gmt":"2026-03-24T16:20:52","slug":"experiential-learning","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/experiential-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"Experiential Learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Whether representing underprivileged citizens in housing court, helping overturn a wrongful conviction, arguing for a client in an unemployment compensation case, or providing <em>pro bono <\/em>support to an immigrant applying for citizenship, you will have opportunities to gain practical skills under the guidance of top legal practitioners.<\/p>\n<p>We offer three types of experiential courses\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/experiential-learning\/clinics\/\">clinics and practicums<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/experiential-learning\/externships\/\">externships<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/experiential-learning\/simulation-courses\/\">simulations<\/a>. Each integrates doctrine, theory, skills, and legal ethics. Students receive ample professional feedback and are also asked to self-evaluate. For JD students, each course counts toward the ABA\u2019s 6-credit experiential learning requirement.<\/p>\n<p>Other opportunities to gain experience, which do not count towards the experiential learning requirement, include serving on the editorial board of <a href=\"\/law\/experiential-learning\/law-journals\/\">one of our six law journals<\/a>, participating in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/about\/offices\/legal-writing-appellate-advocacy-programs\/legal-writing-appellate-advocacy-programs\/appellate-advocacy-program-competitions\/\">moot court competitions<\/a>, or observing oral arguments at one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/student-life\/living-in-boston\/courts\/\">state and federal courts<\/a> in Greater Boston.
