{"id":14006,"date":"2021-11-19T15:23:19","date_gmt":"2021-11-19T19:23:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/?page_id=14006"},"modified":"2026-04-07T09:47:54","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T13:47:54","slug":"intellectual-property","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/academics\/explore-your-options\/intellectual-property\/","title":{"rendered":"Intellectual Property"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">BU Law offers several foundational courses covering the major components of intellectual property law, including copyright, patent, trademark, unfair competition, and trade secret. <span aria-label=\"Rich text content control paragraph\">Our intellectual <span aria-label=\"Rich text content control\">property <\/span>program was ranked #11 in the nation for 2026-27 by <em>U.S. News &amp; World Report<\/em>. <\/span>We are also the only law school in the country to offer a clinic focused on intellectual property and the related field of privacy and technology law: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/experiential-learning\/clinics\/bu-mit-student-innovations-law-clinic\/\">BU\/MIT Student Innovations Law Clinic (SILC)<\/a>.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> In this clinic, law students work with entrepreneurs from BU and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on legal and regulatory compliance issues related to their businesses.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Rich text content control paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">BU Law\u2019s intellectual <\/span><span aria-label=\"Rich text content control\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">property <\/span><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">program is interdisciplinary in nature; members of the law school\u2019s faculty are part of the university\u2019s new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cds-faculty\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Computing and Data Sciences<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> degree program, which empowers students to think about the legal, ethical, and regulatory implications of new technologies. One of the program\u2019s courses is<\/span><span aria-label=\"Rich text content control\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the<\/span><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Law of Algorithms, which explores the legal challenges of technologies powered by artificial intelligence and machine learning. <\/span><span aria-label=\"Rich text content control\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One experiential IP course, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/courses\/lawjd933\/\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Patent Trial Advocacy<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, puts students in the role of trial counsel in a federal civil action. The simulation models a hypothetical patent case, from complaint to trial. <\/span><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Other IP courses cover topics such as <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">entertainment law, the creative economy, and patent trial advocacy.
