BU Law students, faculty, and alumni continue to find creative ways to safely learn and gather. Rights &amp; Human Trafficking Program Helped Pass State Legislation<\/h3><h4 class=\"wp-block-editorial-listicle-header-content-dek\">In July, Massachusetts passed a new budget, and with it, protections for immigrant survivors of domestic abuse and sex trafficking.<\/h4><\/div><\/header><section class=\"wp-block-editorial-listicle-section\"><div class=\"wp-block-editorial-listicle-section-content\"><p>Clinical Associate Professor <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/profile\/julie-a-dahlstrom\/\" target=\"_blank\">Julie Dahlstrom<\/a>, students in her program, BU alumni, agencies, and state representatives formed a coalition that advocated for a policy to help ensure safety for immigrants who report to law enforcement.<\/p><p>Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey recognized the impact of the team\u2019s efforts, \u201cJulie Dahlstrom and students from her Immigrants\u2019 Rights &amp; All of these things are subject to hacking. All of these things will necessarily be made more vulnerable in a mass surveillance state.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p>Professor <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/profile\/robert-l-tsai\/\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Tsai<\/a> saw a theme in the expansion of the executive branch, stating that over time \u201caverage Americans began to look to the president as the primary constitutional actor who will keep the country safe.\u201d<\/p><p>Clinical Associate Professor <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/profile\/sarah-r-sherman-stokes\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sarah Sherman-Stokes<\/a> recognizes: \u201cInstitutionalized racism and xenophobia were always baked into US immigration law but were reinvigorated after 9\/11.\u201d<\/p><p>Catherine Mitrano (CAS\u201989, LAW\u201989), who helped develop the Department of Homeland Security following the attacks, says \u201cI had a personal motivation in making sure we did right by that part of the legislation, giving it the autonomy it needed.
