And I\u2019m more comfortable now with receiving feedback.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Klim studied English and art at Florida State University, then taught English in Japan for nearly four years. When she returned to the US, law school seemed like the next step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI always really liked reading, writing, helping people understand things,\u201d she says. And her mother\u2019s experience influenced her, too: \u201cShe wanted to go to law school, but it wasn\u2019t really possible for her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, Klim is the first in her family to attend a professional school, and she serves as vice president of BU Law\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/student-life\/student-organizations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">First Generation Professionals<\/a> group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both of Barber-Fraser\u2019s mothers are doctors, \u201cso I couldn\u2019t say, \u2018Mom, what do you think of this school or that school?\u2019 They didn\u2019t know about it,\u201d she says. \u201cBU wasn\u2019t really on my radar.\u201d But she was interested in immigrants\u2019 rights, in part because her grandmother immigrated to the US, so when she learned of the BU Law <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/experiential-learning\/clinics\/immigrants-rights-human-trafficking-clinic\/\">Immigrants\u2019 Rights &amp; Human Trafficking Program<\/a>, Barber-Fraser says, \u201cI was intrigued by it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image alignfarleft\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/law\/files\/2021\/01\/Kennedy-Barber-Fraser.jpg\" alt=\"Kennedy Barber-Frazer ('22)\" class=\"wp-image-76259\" width=\"300\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/files\/2021\/01\/Kennedy-Barber-Fraser.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/files\/2021\/01\/Kennedy-Barber-Fraser-275x344.jpg 275w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption>Kennedy Barber-Fraser (\u201922)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, as a student, Barber-Fraser is working to help immigrants in that very program. \u201cSo it\u2019s cool that it\u2019s kind of come full circle,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her judicial internship, too, has been deeply satisfying. As she researched the claims submitted to the court and reflected on how her bench memos might influence the judge, she found herself moved by the opportunity to make a difference in people\u2019s lives. \u201cThese are real people, in a real court, that I\u2019m working for,\u201d she remembers thinking. \u201cIt\u2019s awesome to know that my work was having an impact.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Likewise, Klim\u2019s experience with \u201cJudge O,\u201d as her clerks often call her, \u201chas been great,\u201d she says, even though the pandemic meant she worked remotely. \u201cShe does make an effort to meet [online] with all of us,\u201d Klim says. \u201cAnd it\u2019s really an honor to work for someone who\u2019s so good at her job.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-end-of-article\">It\u2019s also something that was possible only because of the BU Law Access Fund. Thanks to generous donors, this fund was established this year to meet needs that regular financial aid does not cover, from purchasing interview attire to handling emergency expenses in the wake of COVID-19. For Klim and Barber-Fraser, the fund provided a stipend for the summer. \u201cThe stipend was huge for me,\u201d Klim says. \u201cI support myself entirely on student loans and scholarships. Many internships are unpaid, and you don\u2019t get credit for them so you can\u2019t apply for a loan. I don\u2019t think it would have been possible for me to do it at all without the stipend.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"wp-block-editorial-aside record-block-editorial-aside\">\n<p><a
