Gray, <a href=\"https:\/\/neds.org\/leadership-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alexandra Glazier<\/a> (LAW\/SPH\u201996) regularly received calls in the middle of the night from one of her clients\u2014the New England Organ Bank (NEOB)\u2014requesting assistance in navigating the complex legal requirements for organ donation that need to be addressed and resolved in critically short timeframes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes the challenge was that one parent wanted to donate a dying or deceased child\u2019s organ and another parent did not (both parents\u2019 approval is required in such cases); or maybe the potential donor was a homicide victim and the next of kin\u2014whose permission was needed to go forward\u2014was the alleged perpetrator of the crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe questions they called me with almost never had a clear answer,\u201d Glazier recalls. \u201cBut I loved getting these calls because it was so interesting, and I understood that the work was going to impact lives \u2014not <em>someday<\/em>, but that night.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why, when Glazier decided to leave the law firm in 2003, her next move was clear: She called the then-chief executive officer of NEOB and offered her services as general counsel, a position the organization didn\u2019t yet have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI said, \u2018I\u2019ve seen your legal bills; I think you\u2019d do well to hire a GC,\u2019\u201d she recalls, laughing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two weeks later, she was offered the role she had pitched. Now, nearly two decades after she joined the organization, Glazier is the president and chief executive officer of NEOB and of <a href=\"https:\/\/neds.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New England Donor Services<\/a>, a parent entity she formed in 2017 when she combined NEOB with LifeChoice Donor Services, another organ procurement organization. When Glazier became CEO she hired BU Law alum Lisa Paolillo (\u201994) as the GC.&nbsp; \u201cLisa was one of my best hires &#8211; she\u2019s an incredible legal powerhouse which was key for me to move out of the GC role and step into an executive role.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bu-pullquote record-block-bu-pullquote alignwide is-style-pop has-quaternary-theme\"><div class=\"wp-block-bu-pullquote-inner\"><blockquote><div class=\"container-lockup\"><div class=\"container-icon-outer\"><div class=\"container-icon-inner\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"container-text\"><hr\/><div class=\"quote-sizing\">It really is a privilege to work in a field where we\u2019re seeing the absolute best in people at the one of worst moments of their life in many cases\u2014people who want to help others they don\u2019t even know, but know are in need<\/div><footer class=\"caption\">Alexandra Glazier, CEO of New England Donor Services<\/footer><hr\/><\/div><\/div><\/blockquote><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Since Glazier formed New England Donor Services, the number of organs transplanted from donors in the LifeChoice service area\u2014parts of Connecticut and west central Massachusetts\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/alexandra-glazier-914677\/\">has grown by 108 percent<\/a> (from 115 transplants in 2016 to 239 transplants in 2019). But the fact that there is a shortage of organs means there is always room for improvement. The <a href=\"https:\/\/neds.org\/the-national-perspective\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">US ranks among the best in the world in organ procurement<\/a>, but, according to the US Department of Health and Human Services\u2019 Division of Transplantation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.organdonor.gov\/statistics-stories\/statistics.html#glance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">there are still more than 100,000 people in need of a transplant and 17 people die every day waiting for an organ that never comes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-bu-clicktotweet has-format-highlight\"><span class=\"wp-block-bu-clicktotweet-content\"><span class=\"wp-block-bu-clicktotweet-highlight\">\u201cAs good as we are, as long as there are patients in need, we are committed to keep doing better,\u201d Glazier says.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Glazier, who grew up in the Boston area, knew she wanted to work in the public health and policy realm even in high school, when she was fascinated by issues raised by the Human Genome Project and debates over assisted suicide. She studied biomedical ethics at Brown University and then enrolled at Boston University School of Law specifically because of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/current-students\/jd-student-resources\/dual-degrees\/jd-mph-law-public-health\/\">dual JD\/MPH in <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/current-students\/jd-student-resources\/dual-degrees\/jd-mph-law-public-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Law and Public Health program. At the time, Glazier didn\u2019t intend to work as a practicing <\/a>attorney\u2014an undergraduate advisor had recommended she pursue law as a professional supplement to public health policy work\u2014but she fell in love with her coursework at BU Law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe way to think about problem solving through the law fit very naturally with the way I approached things,\u201d she says. \u201cI learned how to develop critical thinking into a principled framework that allowed you to facilitate difficult problem solving.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Glazier says she enjoyed many of her courses and professors but points to Professors Tracey Maclin and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/profile\/wendy-k-mariner\/\">Wendy Mariner<\/a> as especially important mentors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For several years before she took the helm at NEOB and NEDS, Glazier also taught a seminar on legal issues in medical research as an adjunct professor at BU Law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI missed the law tower, I have to admit,\u201d she laughs, adding that her \u201cstudents were amazing. It was very engaging.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to her position at NEDS, Glazier serves in a number of advisory roles, including as <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/optn.transplant.hrsa.gov\/members\/committees\/\" target=\"_blank\">chair of the Policy Oversight Committee<\/a> of the Department of Health and Human Services\u2019 Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network; and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/unos.org\/community\/regions\/region-1\/\" target=\"_blank\">on the board of the United Network for Organ Sharing<\/a>, which develops policies for the network. She has helped spearhead <a href=\"https:\/\/unos.org\/news\/updated-18-month-monitoring-report-liver-intestine-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">changes to organ allocation policies that minimize the impact of a patient\u2019s location in an effort to maximize the number of lives saved<\/a>.
