Through its partnerships with area organizations, the GTP connects students with <em>pro bono <\/em>work for organizations such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbls.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greater Boston Legal Services<\/a> and Harvard Law School\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/hls.harvard.edu\/dept\/clinical\/clinics\/federal-tax-clinic-lsc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal Tax Clinic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese partnerships not only have the benefit of providing experiential opportunities for students, but allow the program to make a significant impact in providing much needed advising assistance to Boston residents,\u201d says GTP Director Sara Marshall.<\/p>\n<p>Marshall notes that pursuing part-time experiential opportunities during the semester and during breaks is one of the best ways for students to apply their newly acquired knowledge to real-world settings\u2014something that employers look for when recruiting recent LLM graduates.<\/p>\n<p>Angela Pau (GTP\u201916) agrees. Now a member of Ernst &amp; Young\u2019s state and local tax group, Pau says experiential opportunities are one of the most valuable parts of going to law school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe book studying is important and you need that background and foundation,\u201d Pau says. \u201cBut it really comes alive when you\u2019re intersecting academics with people and the lives that are affected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a student in the GTP, Pau did <em>pro bono<\/em> work for Harvard Law\u2019s Federal Tax Clinic. She worked on 10 cases for clients, 90 percent of whom live below the poverty line.<\/p>\n<p>One of her cases involved an elderly veteran\u2019s financial disability status. Her client suffered multiple strokes, had no family and lived alone in a VA hospital. Pau helped file a claim for financial disability to abate his tax liabilities.<\/p>\n<p>She says the work brings strength to the ongoing anti-poverty movement. Through the GTP\u2019s experiential opportunities, students can \u201cexplore tax strategies that can prevent poverty going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harvard Law Federal Tax Clinic Director Keith Fogg says the work helps students gain necessary client interaction skills and bolsters their confidence going forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven though 90 percent of students will practice transactional tax law rather than work on tax controversy issues, it\u2019s helpful to know what happens when things go wrong,\u201d he says. \u201cIf you can understand what happens when things go wrong, it makes you more confident to spot those issues in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While a majority of LLM students will go into major accounting firms, Marshall says the GTP\u2019s partnerships help students refine important skills they\u2019ll be called upon to deploy later on, such as performing valuations, analyzing and applying the tax code to specific facts, and communicating with clients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe skills and knowledge required to work with individual <em>pro bono<\/em> clients, and the time management and organization skills required for a student to balance a full course load with extracurricular activities, resemble the package of competencies needed to succeed at a large, private sector employer,\u201d Marshall says. \u201cThese skills are highly transferrable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She is quick to point out that learning in the classroom is one thing, but taking that knowledge and advising a client with it is another. Applying classroom learning to a real situation allows the material to \u201creally sink in and crystallize.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael Steffany (GTP\u201915) currently works at RSM, an international accounting firm. As a member of the firm\u2019s international tax group, Steffany often deals with individual clients whose international investments have been improperly reported. He says the skills he gained while volunteering with Greater Boston Legal Services\u2014such as tax research, tax-based writing, and client advocacy\u2014directly apply to the work he does today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGreater Boston Legal Services is a nurturing environment,\u201d Steffany says. \u201cYou\u2019re given real responsibilities but aren\u2019t afraid to learn on the job.
