Music has brought me so much joy throughout my life. For law students, music offers a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/wellness-and-prevention\/keep-your-brain-young-with-music#:~:text=It%20provides%20a%20total%20brain,%2C%20mental%20alertness%2C%20and%20memory.\" target=\"_blank\">plethora of benefits<\/a>. Music works wonders in terms of reducing stress and anxiety. It also stimulates creativity and helps to improve cognitive functions like memory.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A few years ago, I shared a collection of my favorite and most inspiring <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/record\/articles\/2020\/dean-onwuachi-willig-summer-jams-playlist\/\" target=\"_blank\">summer jams<\/a>&nbsp;with the BU Law community. As I enter my eighth academic year at Boston University as dean and the Ryan Roth Gallo Professor of Law, I wanted to share a few more of my favorite songs to help everyone start this school year on the right note.<\/p>\n\n\n<iframe data-testid=\"embed-iframe\" style=\"border-radius:12px\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/playlist\/7fwzrqdMPCYG8IzCXUlFNJ?utm_source=generator\" width=\"100%\" height=\"352\" frameBorder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:39px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Each song in the playlist has a different meaning to me, and I added each one to the list for varying reasons. I began with \u201cNot Like Us\u201d by Pulitzer-Prize-winning Kendrick Lamar for two reasons. First and foremost, I wanted to start the playlist with BU Law pride, proclaiming to our students that \u201cWe\u2019re the best! Those other schools just aren\u2019t like us!\u201d Second, we had a blast as a faculty performing our version of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DKPeFflM3TB\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cYou\u2019re Just Like Us\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;for the graduating class of 2025 at last year\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DJt86_4x43-\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3L farewell dinner<\/a>, an annual meal where professors don aprons and chef\u2019s hats to serve students a meal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of the back-to-school theme, I jokingly added \u201cABC\u201d by the Jackson Five,&nbsp;\u201cAnother Brick in the Wall, Part 2\u201d by Pink Floyd, and \u201cWhat A Wonderful World!\u201d by Sam Cooke. All three songs evoke memories from my childhood. We all started our education with learning the alphabet, and \u201cABC\u201d compares falling in love to learning the basics in education. The Pink Floyd song is an anthem. It reminds me as an educator of the importance of helping students develop as critical consumers of knowledge. And, who can resist bopping to the voice of Sam Cooke singing <em>\u201cDon\u2019t know much about history. Don\u2019t know much biology. Don\u2019t know much about a science book. Don\u2019t know much about the French I took.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the things that I love most about music is the way in which it captures our emotions, so I included a whole series of songs that should resonate with the anxieties and stresses of being a student. \u201cOverkill\u201d by Men at Work. \u201cCrawling\u201d by Linkin Park. \u201cHead Over Heels\u201d by the Go-Gos. \u201cI Love Me\u201d by Demi Lovato. \u201cGetting Better\u201d by The Beatles. \u201cAnxiety\u201d by Sleepy Hallow featuring Doechi (which now also makes me laugh because of the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@willsmith\/video\/7481699258819693870?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\">video<\/a>&nbsp;with Will Smith and \u2018Ashley Banks\u2019 from the&nbsp;<em>Fresh Prince of Bel-Air<\/em>&nbsp;dancing with Doechi). These songs may help remind students (and faculty and staff) that we are all facing individual challenges every day, and I hope these songs can provide everyone with some much-needed motivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While many of these songs are included as inspiration for the new school year, some are thrown in just because they are jams or because they come with a specific memory. For example, I included \u201cIt\u2019s Going Down\u201d because I have a happy memory of seeing Yung Joc in the Minneapolis airport and then grabbing a photo with him. The most obvious is \u201cShout\u201d by Tears for Fears. \u201cTalking \u2018Bout a Revolution\u201d is special to me because I used to listen to it before writing my own papers in college. Tracy Chapman always seemed to get the creative juices flowing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, I wanted to end with a series of feel-good and pick-me-up songs, from \u201cTry Again\u201d by Aaliyah to \u201cDreams\u201d by Gabrielle to \u201cPaperback Writer\u201d by The Beatles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-end-of-article\">I hope this playlist brings joy, excitement, and comfort to members of the BU Law community as we all begin this fall semester. Whether you are a new student, faculty member, or staff member or returning to BU Law for another year, it is important for all of us to take a moment to enjoy some jams.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside
