Pratt<\/a> joined Boston University School of Law as our first ever Jurist in Residence. Over the course of his two-week residency, Judge Pratt engaged with the BU Law community, sharing his expertise with students, faculty, and staff. Judge Pratt, an inactive United States District Judge for the Southern District of Iowa, served on the bench for over 26 years after being nominated by President Bill Clinton in 1997. <\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>During his time at BU Law, Judge Pratt took every opportunity to engage with the community\u2014making appearances at many different events, meeting with students and faculty, speaking on panels and lectures, sitting in on classes, joining workshops, and much more\u2014to share his background and deliver insights into the judiciary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was extraordinary having Judge Pratt around, holding open his vast professional experience to our community,\u201d says <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/profile\/jessica-silbey\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jessica Silbey<\/a>, associate dean for intellectual life and professor of law. \u201cHe was here only two weeks, but it was a packed two weeks, and we are grateful to him for enriching our community. In addition to being a brilliant lawyer and jurist, he is truly a kind and affable gentleman. We learned much from him. They\u2019re very idealistic, and I found confirmation in that when I would visit with them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his time at BU Law, Judge Pratt had breakfast with JD and LLM students, discussing the role that lawyers and judges play in creating a more equitable legal system. He answered the students\u2019 questions on everything from cases he had heard in his career to his best clerking advice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat struck me was not just how generous Judge Pratt was with his time with our students, but how earnest and engaged he was,\u201d says <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/profile\/jennifer-taylor-mccloskey\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jen Taylor McCloskey<\/a> (\u201905), executive director of advocacy and legal skills programs. \u201cHe really wanted our law students to come away from these conversations empowered to choose a path that would allow them to give back, to help others, and to be a force for good in whatever type of legal work they decide to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/admissions-aid\/financialaid\/scholarships\/jd-scholarships\/aspire-antiracist-scholarship\/\" target=\"_blank\">ASPIRE<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/admissions-aid\/financialaid\/scholarships\/jd-scholarships\/public-interest-scholarships\/\" target=\"_blank\">Public Interest Scholar<\/a> Reception, providing insights into the current judicial system and guiding students on how to make an impact with their legal degree. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn his remarks, Judge Pratt provided invaluable advice to the students about creating a meaningful life in the law,\u201d says <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/profile\/caitlin-glass\/\" target=\"_blank\">Professor Caitlin Glass<\/a>, visiting lecturer and clinical instructor in the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/experiential-learning\/clinics\/antiracism-and-community-lawyering-practicum\/\" target=\"_blank\">Antiracism and Community Lawyering Practicum<\/a>. \u201cHe urged them to do something that would make them feel at the end of the day like they had made a contribution in some way. I think his words will resonate with students regardless of their individual paths and the roads they travel after leaving BU Law.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the reception, Judge Pratt talked with many students, faculty, and staff, offering personal anecdotes from his career and connecting with the BU Law community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJudge Pratt\u2019s life in public service inspired the students, and they enjoyed getting to know him at the reception, around the law school, and at numerous other events during his visit,\u201d says <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/profile\/claire-bishop-abely\/\" target=\"_blank\">Professor Claire Bishop Abely<\/a>, senior lecturer in the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/academics\/find-degrees-and-programs\/jd-program\/lawyering-program\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lawyering Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div seminars, including <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/profile\/robert-m-thomas\/\" target=\"_blank\">Professor Robert Thomas<\/a>\u2019 Contemporary Issues class, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/profile\/jade-brown\/\" target=\"_blank\">Professor Jade Brown<\/a>\u2019s Consumer Economic Justice clinical seminar, and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/profile\/jed-handelsman-shugerman\/\" target=\"_blank\">Professor Jed Shugerman<\/a>\u2019s torts class, which covered the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irmi.com\/term\/insurance-definitions\/federal-employers-liability-act-of-1908#:~:text=The%20Federal%20Employers%20Liability%20Act,for%20personal%20injury%20(PI).\" target=\"_blank\">Federal Employees Liability Act<\/a> that Judge Pratt had experience working with during his career. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had just wonderful discussions with faculty members in and outside of the classroom,\u201d says Judge Pratt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-editorial-photoessay record-block-editorial-photoessay alignwide wp-block-photoessay Robert W. Pratt,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/hls.harvard.edu\/faculty\/nancy-gertner\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hon. Nancy Gertner<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rid.uscourts.gov\/judges\/john-j-mcconnell-jr\" target=\"_blank\">Hon. John McConnell Jr.<\/a>, focused on the ethical obligation to improve the law and moderated by&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/profile\/zohra-ahmed\/\" target=\"_blank\">Associate Professor Zohra Ahmed<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJudge Pratt\u2019s time here during his Jurist in Residence visit has been incredibly valuable to me,\u201d says Alejandro Perez (\u201925), executive editor of the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/bulawreview\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Boston University Law Review<\/em><\/a>. Gilliam<\/a>, Judge Pratt and members of the BU Law community attended the Boston Red Sox vs. Tampa Bay Rays game at Fenway Park to watch President Gilliam throw out the first pitch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI love baseball,\u201d says Judge Pratt. \u201cHaving the evening, wearing my <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DAWJZxsPSVK\/?img_index=1\" target=\"_blank\">BU Law Gilliam number 11 shirt<\/a>, meeting with BU alums, and looking out on the green monster as the sun goes down over Fenway Park\u2013\u2013it\u2019s hard to top that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reflecting on his Jurist in Residence visit, Judge Pratt borrows from <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/supremecourthistory.org\/chief-justices\/william-rehnquist-1986-2005\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist<\/a>\u2019s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fedbar.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/01\/feature1-0107-pdf-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">experience as a Jurist in Residence<\/a>, describing his time at BU Law as \u201cTons of fun and lots of learning as well.\u201d Judge Pratt also enjoyed Boston beyond the BU campus with his wife of 53 years, Rose Mary. Together they attended Mayor Michelle Wu\u2019s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/local-news\/2024\/09\/23\/watch-mayor-wu-plays-rhapsody-in-blue-with-boston-pops\/\" target=\"_blank\">performance of \u2018Rhapsody in Blue\u2019<\/a> for the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bso.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Boston Symphony Orchestra<\/a> and a tour of the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bpl.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Boston Public Library<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was an experience that I wish every judge and every lawyer could have, because I learned so much, and I took away from it so much,\u201d says Judge Pratt. \u201cI\u2019m inspired by both the faculty and the students, because they seem to really care about each other. They have a joint message, which comes from the top with Dean Onwuachi-Willig: \u2018the law has to be something more than a way to make a living.\u2019 The law has to be the way we get along with each other, the way that we share our gifts. And I think that was the way I took the faculty and the students; they were sharing with me, and I was sharing with them. It was just an inspiring occasion for me and my wife.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">Likewise, the Boston University School of Law community is enriched for having welcomed Judge Pratt as our first Jurist in Residence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-end-of-article\">\u201cJudge Pratt has been a true inspiration for so many of us in the law. His career reflects both his great legal mind and his deep commitment to justice, fairness, and compassion,\u201d Dean <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/profile\/angela-onwuachi-willig\/\"
