Bright<\/a> served as director, and later president and senior council, of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schr.org\/\"><\/a><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.schr.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Southern Center for Human Rights<\/a>, a nonprofit public interest law firm that worked to enforce the civil and human rights of people in the criminal justice system, particularly those facing the death penalty and challenging cruel and unusual incarceration conditions. While at the Southern Center for Human Rights, Bright argued and won four capital cases before the Supreme Court: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/1987\/87-5277\"><em><\/em><\/a><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/1987\/87-5277\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Amadeo v. Zant<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;(1987), <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/2007\/06-10119\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Snyder v. Louisiana<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;(2007), <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/2015\/14-8349\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Foster v. Chatman<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;(2015), and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/2016\/16-5294\" target=\"_blank\"><em>McWilliams v. Dunn<\/em><\/a> (2016).<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>These four cases are the basis for BU Law Professor <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/profile\/robert-l-tsai\/\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Tsai<\/a>\u2019s newest book <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/wwnorton.com\/books\/9780393867831\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Demand the Impossible: One Lawyer\u2019s Pursuit of Equal Justice for All<\/em><\/a>, which traces Bright\u2019s career and impact as a cause lawyer relentlessly pursuing an end to racial and economic discrimination within the criminal justice system. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On March 28, 2024, BU Law hosted a conversation between Bright and Tsai on Tsai\u2019s book and Bright\u2019s book, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thefearoftoomuchjustice.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Fear of Too Much Justice: Race, Poverty, and the Persistence of Inequality in the Criminal Courts<\/em><\/a>, an account of the \u201cstructural failures that undermine justice in our criminal courts.\u201d BU Law Professor <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/profile\/jed-handelsman-shugerman\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jed Shugerman<\/a>, a former student of Bright\u2019s capital punishment course at Yale Law School, moderated
