Building on a deep commitment to equity, justice, and engagement with communities. Strengthening interdisciplinary partnerships across the University. And augmenting robust professional development opportunities for faculty and staff. Those are some of the priorities Boston University School of Law Clinical Associate Professor <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/profile\/julie-a-dahlstrom\/\" target=\"_blank\">Julie A. Dahlstrom<\/a> has in her new role as associate dean for experiential education.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Dahlstrom took over the position on July 1 from Clinical Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/profile\/karen-pita-loor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Karen Pita Loor<\/a>, who had served in the post since 2019 and will return to full-time teaching after a sabbatical this fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boston University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/experiential-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">experiential learning<\/a> offerings are focused on equity and include clinics and practicums, externships, and simulations. The opportunities range from representing MIT and BU students in their research, advocacy, and creative projects to drafting legislation and advocating for the needs of people living with mental illness, all while confronting a changing legal landscape in which new technologies\u2014including artificial intelligence\u2014are becoming more widespread. At the same time, there is a growing awareness that lawyers must center the needs of the communities they serve\u2014a \u201cmoving away from the lawyer-expert vision,\u201d Dahlstrom says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a really exciting time to be involved in experiential learning,\u201d she adds. \u201cWe\u2019re seeing the practice of law at a point of tremendous change. It\u2019s an opportunity for teachers to think about what it means for lawyers to engage in this important moment in communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dahlstrom has been deeply involved with the experiential learning program at BU Law. In 2012, she joined the law school to launch the Human Trafficking Clinic, which later became part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/experiential-learning\/clinics\/immigrants-rights-human-trafficking-clinic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Immigrants\u2019 Rights &amp; Human Trafficking Program<\/a>. She has also chaired the Public Service Committee, helped develop the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/about\/offices\/registrar\/curricular-requirements\/concentration-requirements-faculty\/public-interest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">public interest concentration<\/a>, and led efforts to create an annual public interest retreat for students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-rounded alignfarleft\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" src=\"\/law\/files\/2023\/09\/KPL-headshot.jpg\" alt=\"Clinical Professor Karen Pita Loor\" class=\"wp-image-104554\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/files\/2023\/09\/KPL-headshot.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/files\/2023\/09\/KPL-headshot-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/files\/2023\/09\/KPL-headshot-344x344.jpg 344w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/files\/2023\/09\/KPL-headshot-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/files\/2023\/09\/KPL-headshot-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption>Clinical Professor Karen Pita Loor<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In her time as associate dean for experiential education, Loor helped launch the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/experiential-learning\/clinics\/compliance-policy-clinic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Compliance Policy Clinic<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/experiential-learning\/clinics\/civil-litigation-program\/#:~:text=student%20practice%20rule.-,Access%20to%20Justice%20Clinic,for%20coursework%20over%20two%20semesters.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Access to Justice Clinic<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/experiential-learning\/clinics\/health-justice-practicum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Health Justice Practicum<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/experiential-learning\/clinics\/mental-health-litigation-practicum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mental Health Litigation Practicum<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also spearheaded BU Law\u2019s efforts to incorporate anti-bias and cross-cultural competency training in the curriculum, including reviewing the syllabus of every clinic, practicum, and externship with its respective faculty member and offering feedback on how to best explore issues surrounding racism and the law and how to make content more inclusive. Dean Angela Onwuachi-Willig was a leader in the effort <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/legalindustry\/us-law-students-receive-anti-bias-training-after-aba-passes-new-rule-2022-02-14\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to push the ABA to require such training for students<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, Loor guided the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/record\/articles\/2020\/when-representation-goes-remote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">experiential program through pandemic-related shutdowns<\/a> and the racial reckoning that followed the murder of George Floyd at the hands of police. Loor led the experiential faculty as they issued a statement condemning Floyd\u2019s murder, the police killings of other people of color, and the aggressive and militarized policing of racial justice protesters. During the pandemic, she also worked with other faculty to make sure students had what they needed to complete their externships or client representation safely in person or remotely under the University\u2019s Learn <em>from<\/em> Anywhere model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Floyd\u2019s death in May 2020, Loor says, \u201cmade it clear that, despite the fact that we were in the middle of the pandemic, we couldn\u2019t put to the side problems of systemic racism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Loor doubled down on efforts to address those issues in the curriculum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of her strong priorities was ensuring that we as a faculty are committed to addressing issues of bias,\u201d Dahlstrom says. \u201cShe increased training for faculty around these issues and emphasized the importance of teaching about bias, cross-cultural humility, and racism in the classroom. I\u2019m very excited to build upon her leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bu-pullquote record-block-bu-pullquote alignwide is-style-modern has-image-focus-center-middle has-tertiary-theme\"><div class=\"wp-block-bu-pullquote-inner\"><blockquote><div class=\"container-lockup\"><div class=\"container-icon-outer\"><div class=\"container-icon-inner\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"container-text\"><hr\/><div class=\"quote-sizing\">It\u2019s a really exciting time to be involved in experiential learning. It\u2019s an opportunity for teachers to think about what it means for lawyers to engage in this important moment in communities.<\/div><footer class=\"caption\">Julie Dahlstrom, Associate Dean for Experiential Education<\/footer><hr\/><\/div><\/div><\/blockquote><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Dahlstrom also plans to offer regular discussions and pedagogy workshops for faculty professional development related to antiracism, professional identity formation, and the changing landscape of lawyering. For example, in October, Fordham School of Law Professor Norrinda Brown will offer a workshop for experiential faculty about teaching law aligned with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.nyu.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/Hayat%20-%20Freedom%20Pedagogy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Black radical imagination<\/a>, and, in February, Duke University School of Law Professor Anne Gordon will present on how to nurture varied pathways to success for students. Dahlstrom recently launched a brownbag series in which faculty can engage in dialogue about the changing realities of the legal profession and law teaching. In October, they will tackle the intersection of artificial intelligence and experiential education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe practice of law is always evolving, and we, as faculty, have to learn to be nimble and respond,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another priority for Dahlstrom is connecting students and professors from different departments and schools; in September, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/profile\/ziba-cranmer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ziba Cranmer<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rafik B. Hariri Institute for Computing and Computational Science and Engineering<\/a> spoke to faculty about opportunities for law and technology partnerships. That\u2019s something Dahlstrom has emphasized in her own clinical work: In 2018, two students in the Immigrants\u2019 Rights &amp; Human Trafficking Program worked with students from the Hariri Institute and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/law\/record\/articles\/2018\/fighting-crime-theres-an-app-for-that\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">develop an app that can help law enforcement personnel identify victims of labor trafficking<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re committed to thinking about lawyering through a more intersectional lens,\u201d she says. \u201cHow do we solve complex social and legal challenges in ways that involve the law or maybe even respond to law\u2019s failures? This requires that we think across disciplines and often look beyond the law.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dahlstrom also hopes to amplify the voices of students who participate in experiential learning opportunities and the clients they serve, including through a newsletter for the BU Law and broader legal community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-end-of-article\">\u201cPart of all of these efforts is not only about creating community but also messaging to the broader community that this is tremendously important work,\u201d she says. \u201cThere is a greater and growing recognition of the role of experiential education\u2014connecting theory and practice is the best way to learn.
