This followed the collapse of the coalition\u00a0government that included Chancellor Olaf Scholz&#8217; Social Democratic Party. The fall of the so-called &#8220;traffic light coalition&#8221; coincided with the rise of the Alternative for Germany, or AfD, a party to the ideological right of recent German governments. The results of the upcoming contest, which will take place on February 23, promise to be consequential for Germany, for the European Union, and for a region in which economic regulation, immigration, and the war in Ukraine continue to rock political life. To help us understand the outcome of the vote, the Clough Center will host Sonja Kreibich, Consul General of Germany to the New England States, as well as three expert scholars, on February 27.
