Endowed fund to ensure accessibility to law education for all students.
As a first-generation legal professional, Dean Maureen O’Rourke has long recognized the importance of making sure that a BU Law education is available to all qualified students regardless of background or ability to pay.
Inspired by the many contributions Dean O’Rourke has made during her tenure through her leadership and teaching, alumni, led by members of the Dean’s Advisory Board, have established the Mary T. and John J. O’Rourke Scholarship Fund. Named for the dean’s parents, the O’Rourke Scholarship is a fitting tribute to a dean who has served the school exceptionally for 14 years.
Gerry Cohen (’62), an alumnus and a longtime member of the Dean’s Advisory Board presented Dean O’Rourke with the scholarship fund and explained, “I have been deeply impressed and proud of what she has done for the school and the grace with which she’s handled everything. She leaves the school in a much stronger place than she found it, and all alumni should thank her for the transformation she has brought about because of her leadership, focus, and dedication to the students and to BU Law.”
The endowed scholarship has already received gifts totaling nearly $1.7 million, and it will immediately become one of the most well-funded endowed scholarships at the School of Law. Alumni and friends of BU Law and Dean O’Rourke are invited to support this important initiative that will facilitate future educational opportunities for many deserving students in the years ahead.
After announcing the O’Rourke Scholarship, Mr. Cohen then presented Dean O’Rourke, an avid Yankees fan, with a special gift on behalf of the entire BU Law community: a “2” Yankees jersey personally signed by the dean’s favorite player, Derek Jeter.
