The Legal English Certificate Program has been carefully designed to provide a comprehensive, graduated and immersive learning experience, in which students receive dedicated personal attention, written feedback, and the legal vocabulary, knowledge and skills they need to succeed in both professional and educational legal pursuits. The LECP is a collaborative effort between BU Law and BU’s Center for English Language and Orientation Programs (CELOP), both of whom have decades of experience in improving students’ English and Legal English proficiency. Learning legal English and American legal concepts
The Legal English Certificate Program devotes a full year to improving students’ legal English skills and providing an important foundation in core American legal concepts. BU Law’s Legal English Certificate Program (or ‘LECP’) was jointly developed with BU’s Center for English Language and Orientation Programs (CELOP) and is taught entirely by BU Law instructors.
The program is a 25-credit, full-time residential experience where students follow a set curriculum that provides intensive instruction in legal English communication skills, as well as a graduated and foundational exposure to American legal culture, vocabulary, concepts and legal academic skills.
Participants in the LECP include lawyers, non-lawyers, spouses and partners of students in the Boston area, as well as other professionals who stand to benefit from an immersive legal English-language experience at one of America’s premiere law schools. The program’s structure is similar to the first year of the Two-Year LLM Program. Students who complete the LECP (either by itself or as part of the Two-Year LLM Program) will earn the Legal English Certificate from Boston University School of Law, a professional credential that will be recognized around the world.
Boston University is a great place to learn, and Boston is a great place to live. I believe that you will find the Legal English Certificate Program is the perfect place to advance your academic and professional career.
The curriculum consists of 25 credits of course work, successful completion of which results in the Legal English Certificate. There are no electives in this program; all courses are required. For the complete program rules and requirements, please see the Academic Regulations.
The curriculum for the Legal English Certificate Program is the same as the first year of the Two-Year LLM curriculum.
The Legal English Certificate Program features a full-time faculty of lawyers who specialize in Legal English instruction.
