Lyle Nyberg (’73) authors Summer Suffragists: Women Suffrage Activists in Scituate, Massachusetts
A surprising number of nationally recognized suffragists spent summers in Scituate. Historian Lyle Nyberg’s (’73) new book, Summer Suffragists: Woman Suffrage Activists in Scituate, Massachusetts, tells their stories of relaxing by the shore at places like Cedar Point, Second Cliff, Peggotty Beach, and Third Cliff.
“I think it is important to recognize the achievements of the women’s suffrage movement,” said Nyberg, who called the suffragists “educated and dedicated.” “It took so long, but they really advanced our democracy when they achieved women’s right to vote. Having the vote and using it is just as important today, particularly with recent attempts to suppress the vote. The vote, as the late John Lewis said, is the most powerful nonviolent tool we have in a democratic society.”
