Thanks to the grant, I had the opportunity to do research in the National Library and enjoy this amazing city. \u00a0I also delivered a paper in the I Congreso Internacional de Literatura Mexicana Siglos XIX y XX in the National Autonomous University of Mexico, and, perhaps what was most emotional for me, I could participate in one of the round tables that\u00a0took place in Mexico from May to July\u00a0as\u00a0a\u00a0tribute to the writer\u00a0Sergio Pitol, who passed\u00a0away\u00a0recently, in\u00a0April 12, 2018.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-5619 gallery-columns-1 gallery-size-medium'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon portrait'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/las\/academics\/david-scott-palmer-travel-grants\/travel-grant-recipients-2017-2018\/image-3\/'><img width=\"225\" height=\"300\" src=\"\/las\/files\/2019\/10\/image-225x300.png\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/las\/files\/2019\/10\/image-225x300.png 225w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/las\/files\/2019\/10\/image.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span>Masha Vernik<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>I lived in Santa Rita, a Kichwa village in Ecuador, for 2 months, where I taught English at the elementary school, participated in community tourism, and worked on my host family\u2019s\u00a0<i>chakra<\/i>\u00a0(a traditional, subsistence agroforestry farm), among other daily activities. I conducted research on how\u00a0<i>chakras<\/i>\u00a0are being impacted by cacao, the predominant cash crop, and the involvement of external organizations. In January, a Latin American Studies Travel grant made it possible for me to visit Mexico City and make connections with scholars at UNAM and the national library and newspaper archive, former editors of Castellanos\u2019s work, and her son; these connections are crucial to the completion of my edition. The first, in February, focused on Carnival celebrations in the capital city of Port-au-Prince, and how one of the country&#8217;s leading broadcasters uses a range of digital media platforms to convey the occasion to a national, and increasingly international audience. The second trip, to the northern city of Cap Ha\u00eftien, focused on more traditional techniques for broadcasting music on the airwaves.
