It is a versatile and rigorous one-year program that provides students with an interdisciplinary understanding of the regional context, languages, dynamics, and issues in Latin America today.<br \/>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Curriculum<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><br \/>\nThe\u00a0MA in Latin American Studies requires a total of 32 credits divided among core (8 credits) and \u00a0LAS electives (24 credits).<\/p>\n<p>Actual year to year course offerings vary depending on faculty availability.\u00a0 Most classes are taught once per year, but some may be taught less frequently.<br \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<br \/>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Learning Outcomes<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Students will demonstrate intermediate-level proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and oral comprehension of either Spanish, or\/and Portuguese, or another regional language.<\/li>\n<li>Students will demonstrate advanced knowledge of Latin America (history, literature, politics, economics, culture, and social involvements) and do so within an inter-American and global perspective.<\/li>\n<li>Students will demonstrate understanding of the shared traditions that unite Latin America, as well as the cultural and societal differences of the varied parts of the region.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/las\/academics\/latin-american-studies-ma\/lasma-learning-outcomes-2\/?csspreview=true\">Click here <\/a>for a detailed description of learning outcomes.<br \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<br \/>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Courses<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<h5>Core (8 Credits)<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>GRS IR 713\u00a0<em>Latin America: Past &amp; Present<\/em> (4 credits)<\/li>\n<li>One 4-credit research methods* course chosen in consultation with the student\u2019s adviser<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>*Examples of\u00a0 research methods courses:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>CAS LS 577\u00a0<em>Topics in Hispanic Thought and Criticism<\/em> (this course is offered for both seniors and graduate students)<\/li>\n<li>GRS AR 891 <em>Graduate Seminar on Archaeological Theory<\/em><\/li>\n<li>GRS AR 751 <em>Seminar in Mesoamerican Archaeology<\/em><\/li>\n<li>GRS IR 601 <em>Fundamentals of International Relations<\/em>\n<li>GRS IR 602 <em>Quantitative Analysis for Global Affairs<\/em>\n<li>GRS IR 603 <em>Economics for Global Policy<\/em>\n<li>GRS PO 840 <em>Political Analysis<\/em><\/li>\n<li>GRS PO 841\u00a0<em>Quantitative Research Methods<\/em><\/li>\n<li>GRS SO 702<em>\u00a0Proseminar: Sociological Methods<\/em><\/li>\n<li>GRS SO 708\u00a0<em>Contemporary Sociological Theory<\/em><\/li>\n<li>GRS SO 712\u00a0<em>Qualitative Methods<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><strong>LAS Electives (24 Credits)<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Students take six courses related to Latin America, chosen with the approval of the Latin American Studies Program director.\u00a0 At least one course must come from history or the social sciences, and at least one course must come from literature, culture, or art history.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on the MA in Latin American Studies please view the BU Bulletin<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/grs\/programs\/latin-american-studies-ma\/\">here<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<br \/>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Foreign Language<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><br \/>\nStudents must demonstrate a high level of competence in either Spanish or Portuguese, including the capability to read, write, and speak the language with sufficient proficiency to understand and be understood. Competence in the foreign language of the students\u2019 choosing is determined by examination by BU language instructors. Students must pass this examination in order to complete the degree.<br \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<br \/>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Research Project<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><br \/>\nStudents write a Master\u2019s Paper (commonly referred to as an MA Paper) as the capstone component of their degree. The paper may take one of two forms: \u00a0either a traditional research paper or a policy paper. Students are given broad latitude in selecting topics and approaches, in consultation with their advisors.<\/p>\n<p>All MA Papers must be defended orally in front of a panel of three professors, chosen by the Pardee School (one of the three professors will be the student\u2019s adviser).
