Violence and Society: Political Responses from Latin America (10.15.24)

Over the past few decades, criminal and state violence have become a defining feature of everyday life and politics in Latin America. Why do some citizens pursue civic engagement after exposure to violence and not others? How is the left approaching insecurity, policing, and crime in Latin America? How is urban violence shaping urban governance in the region?

Join the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future and the Center for Latin American Studies for a panel discussion bringing together political scientists and sociologists working on a wide range of political responses to violence in the region. The panel will feature Rebecca Bell-Martin (Tecnológico de Monterrey, México), Rebecca Hanson (University of Florida, Harvard-DRCLAS), and Markus-Michael Müller (Roskilde University, Denmark), and will be moderated by Boston University Assistant Professor of Sociology and Pardee Center Faculty Research Fellow Ana Villarreal.
