Andrea Berlin is James R. Wiseman Chair in Classical Archaeology and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Archaeology. She serves as a member of the editorial boards of the\u00a0<\/span>Bulletin of the American Schools of Oriental Research<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Tel Aviv<\/em>. Her areas of interest are the archaeology and history of the Achaemenid, Hellenistic, and Roman East, Ceramic Studies; Second-Temple Judaism; and the archaeology of Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n

Andrea Berlin has had a busy year, and is most proud of overseeing the first in a new series of ceramic handbooks, published in conjunction with the Levantine Ceramics Project: <\/span>The LCP Handbook to the Late Roman Amphora 1<\/span><\/i> (LRA1), by Samuel Grady Gillett and Veronica Iacomi. \u201cThe Persian, Hellenistic, and Roman Pottery\u201d in<\/span> Paneion I: Final Report on the Excavations of the Sanctuary of Pan at Banias-Caesarea Philippi<\/span><\/i> will be published in a monograph in the \u2018Atiqot series of the Israel Antiquities Authority. This chapter explores material she excavated over 30 years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n

Prof. Berlin also delivered a number of scholarly papers: \u201cAlexander the Great and the Archaeology of Celebrity\u201d as a keynote lecture for La Sierra University; \u201cThe Destruction of Mt. Gerizim: Archaeology, History, Interpretation,\u201d for The Harvard Museum of the Ancient Near East and The American Society of Overseas Research; \u201cComfort Objects for Cloudy Times: A Group of Figurines from Ancient Idumea,\u201d for the Society of Biblical Literature; \u201cAlexander the Great at Gordion: A New Episode in an Old Story\u201d for the BU Archaeology Program and The Cobb Institute of Archaeology at Mississippi State University; and \u201cLife at Sardis, Before and After the Peace of Apamea\u201d for Cornell University\u2019s Visual Culture Colloquium.<\/span><\/p>\n

In October 2025, Prof. Berlin organized a one-day workship at the University of M\u00fcnster on Vessels and Wares of Iron Age Jordan, for the Levantine Ceramics Project. In February she was co-host and featured speaker for U.S. Fulbright\/Fulbright-Israel\u2019s anniversary celebration, where she gave a lecture \u201cLooking at Jerusalem from Two Directions\u201d and conducted a keynote interview with Dr. D\u00e9bora Sandhaus, Chief Scientist of the Israel Antiquities Authority, on \u201cShared Pasts, Shared Futures: The IAA and American Archaeologists in Israel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This winter, Prof. Berlin was interviewed on two podcasts: <\/span>The History of Cypress <\/span><\/i>podcast, where she spoke on the Kyrenia ship, and <\/span>Roots & Relics<\/span><\/i>, where she spoke on \u201cExcavating Everyday Life in the Ancient World\u201d with Vinisha Agarwal. She was in the field for six weeks at the sites of Gordion and Sardis, in Turkey, training three graduate students. The most fun project of the year grew out of an interview with children\u2019s book author Stuart Kallen for his book, <\/span>Careers If You Like To Work With Your Hands<\/span><\/i>.
