Check-in provides the ISSO the opportunity to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Review your immigration documents to confirm eligibility for intended study, research, or employment;<\/li>\n<li>Report the arrival of BU sponsored F-1 and J-1 students and scholars in valid status to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, thus activating your SEVIS record;<\/li>\n<li>Help you\u00a0get\u00a0settled on campus and answer\u00a0your questions as you begin your activities at BU; and<\/li>\n<li>Ensure that all students and scholars are added to email lists that provide valuable immigration related information, including travel advisories and tax information, throughout the year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Please complete your initial check-in at the ISSO to avoid jeopardizing your legal immigration status in the U.S.<\/strong><b>, <\/b>and<b> <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/isso\/contact\/\">contact us<\/a> with any questions concerning your immigration status or your adjustment to BU.<\/p>\n<h3>Who Must Check In<\/h3>\n<p>You are considered an international student or scholar if you are not a U.S. Citizen or a U.S. Permanent Resident (\u201cGreen Card\u201d holder).\u00a0 You must report to the ISSO for check-in if you are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a new\u00a0international\u00a0student in any immigration status<\/li>\n<li>a continuing international student beginning a new program of study or returning from a leave of absence<\/li>\n<li>a new scholar (faculty, researcher, or other employee).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>If you are a U.S. Citizen or a U.S. Permanent Resident (\u201cGreen Card\u201d holder), you are not required to check in, however your information may need to be updated in the University system and ISSO may require copies of your passport and\/or U.S. Permanent Resident card.<\/em><br \/>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Students in F-1, J-1, and other immigration classifications<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<h3>When to Check In<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Within 15 days of your program start date<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0We will send you an email prior to the start of class with instructions on how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/isso\/check-in-reservation\/\">schedule a check-in reservation<\/a> in your initial term.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What to Bring<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>All relevant immigration documents (i.e. passport, Form I-20, Form DS-2019, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Immigration documents for any spouse and\/or child(ren) who have accompanied you to the U.S. in a dependent visa status such as F-2 or J-2<\/li>\n<li>Any documents issued to you upon your entry to the U.S.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Any other immigration status related documents, if applicable (e.g. I-797 Approval Notice)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Where to Go<\/h3>\n<h4 style=\"color: #4f81bd;\">Charles River Campus<\/h4>\n<p>International Students &amp; Scholars Office<br \/>\n888 Commonwealth Avenue, 2nd Floor<br \/>\nBoston, MA 02215<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Scholars<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p><b>J-1 Scholars Sponsored by BU<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In addition to checking-in with the ISSO, J-1 scholars are also required to attend the J-1 Scholar Orientation. Please visit the <a title=\"Orientation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/isso\/getting-started\/orientation\/\">Orientation<\/a> page for additional information on times and locations of the orientation sessions and required documents.<\/p>\n<h3>H-1B and O-1 Scholars Sponsored by BU<\/h3>\n<p>Your International Scholar Advisor will work closely with you and your host department throughout the H-1B\/O-1 filing process and will schedule a mutually convenient time to complete your ISSO check-in as we cannot accommodate this process on a walk-in basis. Please be sure to bring your passport and all other relevant immigration documents.<\/p>\n<h3>Scholars in Other Immigration Classifications (F-1 OPT, TN, Visitor, etc.)<\/h3>\n<p>Please refer to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/isso\/administrators\/calendar\/\">ISSO Scholar Services Weekly Calendar<\/a> for check-in times and locations.\u00a0 If you will be paid by BU, you must complete a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/isso\/employment-internships\/employment-at-bu\/\">Form I-9<\/a> at the ISSO within <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">three (3) days<\/span> of your employment start date.\u00a0 And please be sure to bring your passport and all other relevant immigration\/employment authorization documents.\u00a0 In addition, bring your BU appointment letter which would be given to you by your host department.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<p><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>Students and scholars who will be\u00a0receiving compensation from Boston University (salary, stipend, on-campus employment, etc.) will also be required to complete an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/isso\/employment-internships\/employment-at-bu\/\">Form I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification<\/a> at the ISSO.<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We are excited to welcome you to BU!\u00a0 All international students and scholars must check-in with the ISSO upon arrival.
