or from other countries.&nbsp; In all cases, check in with your documents at the ISSO immediately upon arrival to the U.S.&nbsp; Please refer to the appropriate section below.<\/p>\n<p><span>Reentry from a &#8220;Contiguous Territory&#8221;<br \/>\nThe USCIS defines &#8220;contiguous territory,&#8221; as Canada, Mexico, and certain islands in the Caribbean.&nbsp; There are special rules that apply to J-1 students who visit these countries and then reenter the U.S.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>To accomplish this type of program transfer, you must be in lawful J-1 student status.&nbsp; If you suspect or believe that you are not in lawful J-1 status, please see the section below entitled &#8220;<span>Special Information for Students Who Are Not in Lawful J-1 Status.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>If you have a valid J-1 visa in your passport<\/strong><br \/>\nYou may reenter the U.S. and have your transfer completed by the U.S. Immigration Inspector who examines your documents.&nbsp; You must make certain that the Inspector stamps your Boston University DS-2019 form.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you do not have a valid J-1 student visa in your passport<\/strong><br \/>\n(Not available to nationals of <span>Iraq, Iran, Syria, Libya, Sudan, North Korea and<\/span> Cuba.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>You may travel with an expired visa and have your transfer completed when you reenter the U.S. only if:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>You are in lawful J-1 student status;<\/li>\n<li>You do not visit any countries other than contiguous countries during your trip outside the U.S.;<\/li>\n<li>You visit contiguous countries for no more than 30 days;<\/li>\n<li>You keep your USCIS Form I-94 when you leave the U.S. and present it to the Immigration Inspector who will examine your documents when you reenter the country; and<\/li>\n<li>You make certain that the Inspector stamps your Boston University DS-2019 form to validate it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you are not able to meet all these requirements, you must have a valid J-1 visa in your passport in order to reenter the U.S.&nbsp; When you reenter the U.S., give the Immigration Inspector your Boston University DS-2019 form and make certain that the Inspector stamps all the pages to validate it.&nbsp; For detailed information on how to apply for or renew a J-1 visa and how to properly enter the U.S., please refer the section entitled &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/isso\/students\/prospective\/immigration\/j1\/visa\/\">Obtaining a J-1 Student Visa and Entering the United States<\/a>.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Special Information for Students Who Are Not in Lawful J-1 Status<br \/>\nIf you believe that you may not be in lawful J-1 status, you should immediately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/isso\/contact\/student-advising\/\">contact an ISSO advisor<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>If you are not in lawful J-1 status, you must address this situation either by<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Applying to the DOS for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/isso\/students\/current\/j1\/status\/reinstatement\/\">&#8220;reinstatement&#8221;
