{"id":5004,"date":"2013-11-06T12:36:25","date_gmt":"2013-11-06T17:36:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/isso\/?page_id=5004"},"modified":"2023-05-01T15:25:36","modified_gmt":"2023-05-01T19:25:36","slug":"j1","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/isso\/administrators\/checklist\/j1\/","title":{"rendered":"J-1 Process"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The J-1 is the most common immigration classification used to host international scholars as it allows for a variety of arrangements from short-term or long-term unpaid visiting appointments, to full-time paid appointments and\/or a combination of both.<\/p>\n<p>To initiate processing, the host department must obtain an official academic appointment on behalf of the international scholar through the standard appointment channels at the school or college and follow the instructions on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/isso\/administrators\/checklist\/\">Scholar Processing Checklist<\/a>. \u00a0Please note that all new J-1 requests require additional paperwork to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/isso\/english-language-proficiency-determination-for-j-scholars\/\" title=\"English language proficiency for J scholars\">verify English language proficiency<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For Visiting Researcher or other unpaid appointments or for individuals who will be paid by BU, but may require additional support for accompanying family members, proof of sufficient financial support for the duration of the appointment must be included with the processing request. Please consider ISSO processing estimates when requesting J sponsorship and forward the completed application request packet to us at least 60 days prior to the desired appointment start date.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Processing Request Steps<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<ol class=\"green-numbers\">\n<li>ISSO completes initial review of department request<\/li>\n<li>ISSO issues Form DS-2019 form and sends it to prospective scholar according to department instructions<\/li>\n<li>Prospective scholar applies for J-1 visa at a US Embassy or Consulate and travels to the U.S.<\/li>\n<li>Prospective scholar attends ISSO J Scholar Orientation no later than 3 days after start date of the academic appointment and no longer than 30 days after the start date indicated on their Form DS-2019<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Additional information for J-1 Student Intern requests<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>Requirements for the sponsorship in the J-1 Student Intern category are unique, as this program is designed for students enrolled in a college or university program abroad who are completing an internship or academic research in the U.S. In addition to the DS-2019, the ISSO must also issue a Form DS-7002 Training\/Internship Placement Plan, which details the student&#8217;s academic goals, the tasks and activities assigned, and the expected methods of evaluation and must be signed by the supervising faculty member.\u00a0 The BU host supervisor must prove a written evaluation of the student intern&#8217;s academic progress at the end of the internship as well as at the mid-point, for internships lasting more than six months.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the standard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/isso\/administrators\/checklist\/\">Processing Request Packet<\/a>, two additional forms are required for the ISSO to prepare sponsorship documents in this category: (1)\u00a0BU <a href=\"\/isso\/files\/2023\/05\/J-1-Student-Intern-BU-Host-Dept-Certification.pdf\">Host Dept Certification<\/a>, and (2) a <a href=\"\/isso\/files\/2023\/05\/J-1-Student-Intern-Home-Institution-Certification.pdf\">Home Institution Certification<\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>As a Department of State designated J-1 program sponsor, the ISSO is required to monitor and report the location and activities of the J-1 Exchange Visitor and their J-2 dependent family members throughout their stay at BU.
