We encourage you to contact us any time you plan to travel outside the U.S., especially because reentry regulations and practices continue to change. A conversation with our staff prior to travel can help you avoid delays and other difficulties.<\/p>\n<h3>Temporary Absence<\/h3>\n<p>A temporary absence is defined as travel outside the U.S. for five months or less. Read on for reentry requirements.<br \/>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Students (F-1)<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>If you remain continuously registered for a full course of study with BU but wish to travel outside the U.S., you are permitted to reenter the U.S. after five months or less as long as:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Your current Boston University I-20 if page three (3) is properly signed for travel by the ISSO (see also \u201cRequired Documents\u201d and \u201cTravel Signatures\u201d below)<br \/>\nAND<\/li>\n<li>There is no significant change to the information on that I-20,<br \/>\nOR<br \/>\nYou have a new Boston University I-20 if there has been a significant change to the information on your current I-20,<br \/>\nOR<br \/>\nYou have a new school\u2019s I-20 if you will attend a school other than Boston University when you return (see <a href=\"#\">Transferring from Boston University<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<br \/>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Students (J-1)<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>If you remain continuously registered for a full course of study with BU but wish to travel outside the U.S., you are permitted to reenter the U.S. after five months or less as long as:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Your current passport is valid at least six months into the future.<\/li>\n<li>You have a valid J-1 visa stamp.<\/li>\n<li>You have a Form I-94 (Departure Record).\n<li>Your Form DS-2019 is endorsed by the responsible officer (RO) or alternate responsible officer (ARO) at our office. This travel signature indicates that you are in good standing at BU and are eligible to return. (See travel signatures, below.)<br \/>\nOR<br \/>\nYou have a new Boston University DS-2019 if there has been a significant change to the information on your current one,<br \/>\nOR<br \/>\nYou have a new school\u2019s DS-2019 if you will attend a school other than Boston University when you return (see <a href=\"#\">Transferring from Boston University<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<h3>Longer Absences<\/h3>\n<p>Any travel outside the U.S. more than five months in duration is considered longer than a temporary absence. <\/p>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Students (F-1)<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>As your current I-20 will be invalid, you must request a new I-20 to return to BU\u2014or, if you will attend a school other than BU when you return, reenter or on a new school&#8217;s I-20.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Important for F-1 holders<\/strong>: Although your F-1 status will be valid upon reentry to the U.S. with the new I-20, you will have to maintain a full course of study for another nine consecutive months from the date of reentry to be eligible for off-campus employment.<br \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<h3>Required Documents<\/h3>\n<p>When traveling outside the U.S., all Exchange Visitors are required to have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A passport valid for at least six months<\/li>\n<li>A valid visa stamp<\/li>\n<li>For F-1 status: a Form I-20 with travel signature<\/li>\n<li>For J-1 status: a Form DS-2019 with travel signature<\/li>\n<li>For H-1 status: the I-797 Approval Notice and I-94 card<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Travel Signatures<\/h3>\n<p>A travel signature authorizes you to leave and reenter the country with a valid passport, visa stamp, and Form I-20 or DS-2019. Only a responsible officer (RO) or alternate responsible officer (ARO) at ISSO may provide you with a valid travel signature. <\/p>\n<p>To request a travel authorization signature, please visit the ISSO with your passport containing the visa stamp and Departure Record (I-94 card). Travel signature requests are processed in one business day. However, in case of complications with your documents or record, we recommend that you request your travel signature at least one week in advance of the day you plan to travel.<\/p>\n<h3>Travel to Replace a Visa<\/h3>\n<p>Content TK<\/p>\n<h3>Travel after Program Completion or Employment\/Research Termination<\/h3>\n<p>Content TK<\/p>\n<h3>Tips for Successful Travel<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Copy your documents.<\/strong><br \/>\nAll copies of your immigration documents should be clean and clear. Include your I-797 approval notice, passport, and any I-94 card. Keep your copies in a safe place, and make them part of your permanent records.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Carry your documents with you at all times.<\/strong><br \/>\nImmigration laws require H-1 holders to carry at least the I-94 card at all times. If you choose not to carry the card itself, at least keep a good photocopy with you. It\u2019s also a good idea to carry copies of your passport, visa, and any I-20, DS-2019, or I-797. If you travel outside of the Boston area, you should carry the originals with you.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Check with us<\/strong> any time you are about to travel or have questions about requirements for visa renewal or U.S. reentry.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keep up-to-date<\/strong> on information from your Consulate or Embassy so you know what you\u2019ll be required to do.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keep our contact information<\/strong> and that of your Consulate or Embassy handy in case you need assistance while out of the U.S.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are many reasons you may choose to travel outside the U.S. during your course of study or employment with BU\u2014study or research, a visit home, tourism, or visa renewal among them.
