Each F-1 student and J-1 exchange visitor has a unique SEVIS record created by ISSO before issuing your immigration document. Your SEVIS number is located in the upper right corner of your immigration document.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">SEVIS enables BU to provide updated program information to government agencies as required by federal sponsorship regulations. Updates, program extensions, and document issuance are all recorded through SEVIS.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">Key Immigration Requirements Related to SEVIS:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">New F-1 students, J-1 exchange visitors, and F-2\/J-2 dependents must complete Initial ISSO check-in remotely by answering questions and uploading immigration documents within 15 days of arriving in the U.S. or program start date. Check-in is done via <a href=\"https:\/\/issoportal.bu.edu\/_portal\/\">ISSOPortal<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">Continuing F-1 students must register for classes each semester so ISSO can report continued attendance to DHS via SEVIS.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">ISSO maintains accurate SEVIS records for each student and exchange visitor.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">Reportable Events in SEVIS<\/h3>\n<p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">BU reports only federally required information, including data on your immigration document (I-20 or DS-2019), personal info, program details, dependents, and financial data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">Additional reportable events affecting nonimmigrant status include:<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">For F-1 Students:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Semester registration\/enrollment<\/li>\n<li>Leaves of absence, suspensions, withdrawals<\/li>\n<li>Authorized\/unauthorized drops below full course of study<\/li>\n<li>Off-campus employment<\/li>\n<li>Changes in U.S. residential address<\/li>\n<li>Changes in major, program, or expected completion date<\/li>\n<li>Transfers to a new college or degree level<\/li>\n<li>Employment periods authorized or unauthorized<\/li>\n<li>Termination of status (degree completion, status change, failure to maintain status, etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">For J-1 Exchange Visitors:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Program extensions<\/li>\n<li>Changes of status<\/li>\n<li>Replacement of lost forms<\/li>\n<li>Amendments and corrections<\/li>\n<li>Changes in school or sponsor<\/li>\n<li>Completion of studies or exchange program<\/li>\n<li>Changes in funding<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"mb-2 whitespace-pre-wrap\">More details on SEVIS can be found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ice.gov\/sevis\">U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)<\/a> website.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) is a real-time electronic system that maintains records for individuals in F or J status.
