USCIS Announces Application Pause for Increased Vetting for Nationals of Travel Ban Countries

In addition to a travel ban, USCIS announced a pause to the processing of applications submitted to USCIS for changes, extensions and benefits of status from nationals of travel ban countries to increase vetting before final adjudication. Examples of common USCIS applications include, but are not limited to, applications for employment authorization (OPT and STEM OPT) and changes or extensions of status. See details about the travel ban imposed on individuals from 39 countries and those travelling with documents authorized by Palestinian Authorities in Presidential Proclamation 10949 from June 4, 2025 and Presidential Proclamation 10998 from December 16, 2025.

USCIS will conduct a comprehensive review of all policies, procedures and screening processes for benefit requests as well as a comprehensive re-review of approved benefit requests approved on, or after, January 20, 2021 if submitted by applicants either born in or citizens of the countries specified in the proclamations.

It is unclear how long this pause will remain in place, how it might impact prior USCIS approvals and what new vetting measures will be implemented. ISSO staff will continue to work directly with international students and scholars/employees impacted by these changes directly. However, nationals impacted by the travel ban are urged to work closely with their ISSO advisor to strategize how this could impact future plans and to apply to USCIS as early as possible for any changes and benefits of status as delayed processing is expected.
