{"id":2497,"date":"2015-08-03T13:14:56","date_gmt":"2015-08-03T17:14:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ioc\/?post_type=profile&#038;p=2497"},"modified":"2025-09-30T08:49:26","modified_gmt":"2025-09-30T12:49:26","slug":"wendy-heiger-bernays","status":"publish","type":"profile","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ioc\/profile\/wendy-heiger-bernays\/","title":{"rendered":"Wendy Heiger-Bernays"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>Wendy Heiger-Bernays&#8217;s interests center on understanding how environmental hazards adversely affect people\u2019s health and how risks associated with these exposures can be quantified and decreased.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">As part of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/research\/research-landing-page\/superfund-research-program-at-boston-university\/research-cores\/research-translation-core\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Research Translation Core of the Boston University Superfund Research Program<\/a>, she collaborates with scientific project leads and regulatory environmental and health organizations to apply scientific findings to inform policy and practice.<\/span><span> She collaborates with other researchers to understand patterns of migration of contaminants in municipal compost and soils in urban gardens and risks associated with these agents, to translate this research into cost-effective best practices. Wendy also serves on technical advisory committees for toxicological and environmental health issues at both the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mass.gov\/eea\/agencies\/massdep\/\">Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection <\/a>and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epa.gov\/\">US Environmental Protection Agency<\/a>, and as Chair of her local board of health.<\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Heiger-Bernays co-led a project with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ioc\/profile\/jessica-leibler\/\">Jessica Leibler<\/a> that sought to coordinate and review urban policies on rodent and pest management in large U.S. cities, including Boston.
