{"id":21795,"date":"2025-05-05T11:50:27","date_gmt":"2025-05-05T15:50:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ioc\/?post_type=profile&#038;p=21795"},"modified":"2025-05-05T12:43:46","modified_gmt":"2025-05-05T16:43:46","slug":"deborah-carr","status":"publish","type":"profile","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ioc\/profile\/deborah-carr\/","title":{"rendered":"Deborah Carr"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deborah Carr is director of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ciss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Center of Innovation in Social Science<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/cas-names-inagural-as-term-distinguished-professors\/#:~:text=Pamela%20Templer%2C%20A%26S%20Term%20Distinguished%20Professor%20of%20Biology&amp;text=Professor%20Templer's%20research%20spans%20forest,and%20urbanization%20on%20forest%20ecosystems.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A&amp;S Distinguished Professor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sociology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sociology.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> She is a life course sociologist who uses survey data and quantitative methods to study social factors linked with health and well-being in later life. She has written extensively on inequality in old age, death and dying, bereavement, family relationships over the life course, and the stigma associated with health conditions including obesity and disability. She has published more than 120 articles and chapters, and several books including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucpress.edu\/book\/9780520301290\/aging-in-america\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aging in America <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(University of California Press, 2023) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rutgersuniversitypress.org\/worried-sick\/9780813571812#!\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worried Sick: How Stress Hurts Us and How to Bounce Back<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Rutgers University Press, 2014), as well as several co-authored textbooks including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wwnorton.com\/books\/9780393538021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Introduction to Sociology,<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/wwnorton.com\/books\/9780393537925\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Essentials of Sociology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wwnorton.com\/books\/9780393537529\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Art and Science of Social Research <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(all with W. W. Norton).\u00a0 Her 2019 book\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.russellsage.org\/publications\/golden-years\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Golden Years? Social Inequality in Later Life<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Russell Sage) received the 2020 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geron.org\/Membership\/Member-Center\/Awards\/Awards-Info\/awardnum\/65\/awardsecond\/66\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Richard Kalish Innovative Publication Award<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the Gerontological Society of America. She is also co-editor of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.elsevier.com\/books\/handbook-of-aging-and-the-social-sciences\/ferraro\/978-0-12-815970-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Handbook of Aging &amp; Social Sciences, 9th ed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. (Elsevier, 2021). Her research has been funded by National Institutes of Health, RRF Foundation on Aging, Templeton Foundation, Borchard Foundation, and most recently Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. She was editor-in-chief of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/psychsocgerontology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Journal of Gerontology: Social Sciences <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2015-20), and is principal investigator of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/nls\/nlsy79.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 (NLSY79).<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> She currently serves as editor-in-chief of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/home\/hsb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Health and Social Behavior<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2023-25). Dr. Carr has served on the Board of Directors of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.populationassociation.org\/about\/officers-directors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Population Association of America<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and as chair of the sections on Aging &amp; the Life Course and Medical Sociology of the American Sociological Association. She is a fellow of the Gerontological Society of America, a member of the honorary Sociological Research Association, and the recipient of the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/asasalc.org\/awards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2022 Matilda White Riley Distinguished Scholar Awar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">d and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/asasalc.files.wordpress.com\/2023\/11\/fall2023newsletter.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2023 Outstanding Mentorship Award<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the ASA Aging &amp; Life Course section. She was elected to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amacad.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Academy of Arts &amp; Science<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s in 2024.
