BU Alums’ Self-Lifting Toilet Seat Gets a New Home!

Exciting news! New self-lifting toilet seats have been installed in our bathrooms, developed by BU alumni Max Pounanov and Kevin Tang of Cleana Inc. This innovative idea won the New Venture Competition in 2020 after showing they help with cleanliness and hygiene in publicly used bathrooms, and now that idea has come to life! Watch it work here!

Max (ENG’22) honed his skills as a BU mechanical engineering student, while Kevin (QST’22) inspired young innovators as an Ignite speaker at IdeaCon 2022.

Together, they’ve taken their frustration with unclean public restrooms and turned it into the Cleana toilet seat – a convenient, durable solution to enhance cleanliness. The seat features an antimicrobial, automatic lifting design that has been shown in testing to stay 88% cleaner in public facilities, while the Cleana Home, an automatically closing toilet seat, aims to end the age-old dispute between partners in home bathrooms.

After developing their prototype at BU’s Engineering Product Innovation Center and winning the New Venture Competition, their idea has taken flight!

Innovate@BU exists to nurture talents like Max and Kevin. By providing the space, resources and community to test ideas, we empower big thinkers to become change makers. The Cleana toilet seat shows how small sparks can lead to big impact.
