Unfortunately, as the fleet grows, so does the need for routine maintenance, such as battery charging. An Arduino runs the logic to turn on and off the discrete battery charger.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/iml\/files\/2012\/08\/Quadcopter-underside.jpg\"><\/a><a href=\"\/iml\/files\/2012\/08\/Charging-station.jpg\"><\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-225\" title=\"Quadcopter underside\" src=\"\/iml\/files\/2012\/08\/Quadcopter-underside-636x475.jpg\" alt=\"Quadcopter underside\" width=\"636\" height=\"475\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/iml\/files\/2012\/08\/Quadcopter-underside-636x475.jpg 636w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/iml\/files\/2012\/08\/Quadcopter-underside-1024x764.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 636px) 100vw, 636px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The underside of the quadcopter is covered in some conductive tape. There is a relay system to switch between the flight controller and ESCs and the battery charger. This is an essential part of the system, as otherwise the battery charger gets fooled by the constant current being consumed by the flight electronics.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/iml\/files\/2012\/08\/Quadcopter-in-socket.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-224\" title=\"Quadcopter in socket\" src=\"\/iml\/files\/2012\/08\/Quadcopter-in-socket-636x475.jpg\" alt=\"Quadcopter in socket\" width=\"636\" height=\"475\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/iml\/files\/2012\/08\/Quadcopter-in-socket-636x475.jpg 636w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/iml\/files\/2012\/08\/Quadcopter-in-socket-1024x764.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 636px) 100vw, 636px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The socket itself is made out of 3D printed plastic and conductive tape. The shape of the socket ensures that good contact is always made between the quadcopter and the charger.
