{"id":5,"date":"2011-10-24T09:04:57","date_gmt":"2011-10-24T13:04:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ihi\/home\/"},"modified":"2025-12-19T16:40:18","modified_gmt":"2025-12-19T21:40:18","slug":"home","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ihi\/","title":{"rendered":"IHI Events"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Events Scheduled in Academic Year 2025-2026:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>IHI is planning three banner events in this academic year:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Feb. 25, 2026 (Wed.):\u00a0 Conference on the 1853-1854 Perry Expedition to Japan<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>IHI, in partnership with BUCSA and the BU Division of Military Education, will continue our study of historic Japan-America relations by moving from our IHI conference examining the Treaty of Portsmouth (which ended the Russo-Japanese War) this past spring to conference focusing on Commodore Matthew Perry\u2019s naval diplomacy in his opening of Japan in 1853-54.<\/li>\n<li>On behalf of IHI and BUCSA, we are delighted to report that Dr.Rhode has secured the cooperation of Dr. Matt Perry, 5<sup>th<\/sup> generation descendent of the Commodore and Perry family historian, and\u00a0 Seiichiro Takahashi, the Consul General for New England, to help put together this unique program.<\/li>\n<li>The conference will be held at 121 Bay State Road from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Apr. 09, 2026 (Th.):<\/strong>\u00a0 <strong>Case Study on 20th Century Marijuana Smuggling into the USA<\/strong> by Guest Lecturer: David Tuch.\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Dr. Tuch will center his unique discussion on the wide-ranging, global-reaching activities of Harold Derber, a sailor, WW2 hero, Israeli intelligence operative, entrepreneur, and criminal pioneer who, among other things, invented the \u201cmother ship\u201d approach to greatly expand marijuana smuggling from Latin America to the USA.<\/li>\n<li><em>\u201cIf you smoked grass in the 70s in the U.S., chances are it came in on one of Derber\u2019s ships.\u201d\u00a0 <\/em><\/li>\n<li>Dr. Tuch\u2019s presentation is based on his excellent book, <em>The Wireless Operator<\/em> (Icon 2025).\u00a0 More information about Harold Derber&#8217;s life and the book are available<a href=\"https:\/\/davidtuch.com\/book\/the-wireless-operator\/\"> here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>This presentation will be held at the Riverside Room, 121 Bay State Road from 5:00 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Date TBD:\u00a0 China Reflections<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>IHI Fellow Dr. Grant Rhode will present on his latest China research at a date to be determined in the Spring 2026 semester.\u00a0 Grant has returned to BU after an extended study trip to China.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul><\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Spring 2025 Events:<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>April 30, 2025:\u00a0 <strong>Presentation by Scott L. Bok<\/strong>:\u00a0 IHI thanks <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scott_Bok\">Scott L. Bok<\/a>, the former Chairman &amp; CEO of Greenhill &amp; Co., for meeting with BU students to discuss his newly-published memoir,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Surviving-Wall-Street-Triumph-Tragedy\/dp\/1394326696\"> <em>Surviving Wall Street: A Tale of Trimph, Tragedy, and Timing<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bufcinvest.com\/\">BU Finance &amp; Investment Club<\/a> organized, promoted, and co-sponsored (with IHI) this event, held at Questrom.\u00a0 Mr. Bok offered his historical perspectives on how Wall Street has changed over the course of his forty years of industry experience, spanning corporate law work with Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen, &amp; Kratz, investment banking at Morgan Stanley, and his major role in boutique mergers &amp; acquisitions (M&amp;A) consulting with Greenhill.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>April 09, 2025:<strong> Russo-Japanese War Conference<\/strong>:\u00a0 IHI extends special thanks to IHI Fellow Dr. Grant Rhode, our institutional partners, our presenters, and participants in our one-day international conference entitled &#8220;<strong>A 120-Year Retrospective:\u00a0 The Russo-Japanese War and Treaty of Portsmouth with Implications for Today<\/strong>&#8221; held at BU on April 09, 2025.\u00a0 Over eighty people attended this world-class event.\n<ul>\n<li>Dr. Rhode did everything &#8220;from soup to nuts&#8221; for this conference.\u00a0 He envisioned the event, found institutional partners, raised funds, curated the program and lined upo panelists and presenters, and ensured the conference went off smoothly.\u00a0 Thank you Grant!<\/li>\n<li>BU&#8217;s co-sponsors included the BU Center for the Study of Asia, the Kilachand Honors College, and the BU Division of Military Education.\u00a0 IHI representation included Profs. Amie Genell, Andrei Mamolea, John Woodward, and Prof. Emeritus Erik Goldstein.<\/li>\n<li>Click <a href=\"\/ihi\/files\/2025\/03\/RJ-V3-3-25.pdf\">here<\/a> to access the conference schedule and panel information.<\/li>\n<li>IHI will be posting a video of the event at a future date.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Fall 2024 Events:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Nov. 11, 2024<\/strong>:\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spymuseum.org\/host-an-event\/spy-speaker-series\/darrell-blocker\/\">Darrell Blocker<\/a>, the former Deputy Director of the CIA&#8217;s Counterterrorism Center, discussed &#8220;<strong>Intelligence and Policymakers: Observations of an Operations Officer.<\/strong>&#8221; Co-sponsors included the BU Division of Military Education.\u00a0 Mr. Blocker, an Air Force veteran, was also be the keynote speaker at the Veterans&#8217; Day Memorial Service at Marsh Chapel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Nov. 04, 2024<\/strong>:\u00a0 U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel George Greanias of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ni-u.edu\/\">National Intelligence University<\/a> discussed &#8220;<strong>How the United States Fights War<\/strong>s: The Impact of the Goldwater Nichols Act.&#8221;\u00a0 This presentation was based on LTC Greanias&#8217;s PhD thesis, parts of which are summarized in <a href=\"https:\/\/warontherocks.com\/2023\/09\/goldwater-ripples-how-defense-reform-made-the-fighting-force-more-diplomatic\/\">this article<\/a> published in <em>War on the Rocks<\/em> in Sept. 2023.\u00a0 Co-sponsors of his presentation included the BU Division of Military Education and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bc.edu\/bc-web\/sites\/veterans.html\">Boston College Military and Veteran Suppor<\/a>t.\u00a0 A reception follows LTC Greanias&#8217;s talk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Announcements:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sept. 12, 2025:\n<ul>\n<li>IHI thanks our Fellow, Dr. Maria Robson-Morrow at Harvard University, for inviting IHI Director Prof. Woodward to lead a historical walking tour of Boston for participants in the JFK Center&#8217;s Recanati-Kaplan Fellows Program on Sept. 06, 2025.<\/li>\n<li>IHI is working with institutional partners to plan and organize a Fall 2025 conference event on the BU campus.\u00a0 Different themes are under active consideration.\u00a0 Look for forthcoming details.\u00a0 Please feel free to share your conference thoughts and ideas to Prof. Woodward at jdwjr@bu.edu<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li>Sept. 26, 2024:\u00a0 <span>IHI has lost a good friend with the passing of David W. Hoffman who died on Sept. 24, 2024 after a long battle with cancer.\u00a0 After graduating from BU, David went onto a successful career in global management consulting, becoming a leading energy expert.\u00a0 In retirement, he audited courses at BU, and took his first class with me in the Pardee School in 2016.\u00a0 He was so helpful to me and so popular with his fellow students (much younger than he) that he was dubbed the co-instructor.\u00a0 He regularly gave a guest lecture at BU on the case of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, &#8220;the Atomic Spies,&#8221; which was a student favorite.\u00a0 David had a wonderfully curious mind, an incredible ability to discern the wheat from the chaff, and a first-rate sense of humor.\u00a0 His obituary may be found at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dignitymemorial.com\/obituaries\/brookline-ma\/david-hoffman-12004645\">this link<\/a>.\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u2014 John D. Woodward, Jr.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<ul>\n<li>May 14, 2024:\u00a0 <span>IHI wants to recognize the many years of prolific scholarship and dedicated service of Professor Cathal Nolan on the occasion of his retirement from Boston University.\u00a0 Cathal played an instrumental role in the IHI from its early days working with Prof. William Keyl<\/span><span>o<\/span><span>r<\/span><span>, serving initially as the Executive Director and then after Prof. Keylor\u2019s retirement as IHI Director.\u00a0 Like Bill, Cathal will remain an IHI Fellow and be honored as a Director Emeritus.<\/span><br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Mar. 21, 2024:\u00a0 IHI extends special thanks to IHI Fellow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.belfercenter.org\/person\/maria-robson-morrow\">Dr. Maria Robson-Morrow<\/a> of Harvard University&#8217;s Belfer Center for giving a guest presentation on &#8220;Signals Intelligence in World War II&#8221; to Pardee School students.\u00a0 Dr. Robson-Morrow has the unique ability to explain complicated technical topics (<em>i.e.<\/em>, SIGINT) in terms that a nontechnical person (<em>i.e.<\/em>, most Pardee IR students) can readily understand.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Jan. 08, 2024:\u00a0 IHI is pleased to announce the appointments of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ihi\/maria-robson-morrow-external-fellow\/\">Dr. Maria Robson-Morrow<\/a> of Harvard University&#8217;s Belfer Center, and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ihi\/michael-potter-ihi-external-fellow\/\"> Dr. Michael Potter<\/a>, a member of the Research Service of the Northern Ireland Assembly, as new IHI Fellows.\u00a0 IHI Director John Woodward noted, &#8220;Dr. Robson-Morrow has been a frequent and popular guest lecturer at the Pardee School.\u00a0 Dr. Potter visited us in 2022 to present several well-received talks on issues related to Northern Ireland and conflict resolution.\u00a0 IHI welcomes both of these scholars.&#8221;<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Dec. 14, 2024:\u00a0 IHI is pleased to report that <em>The Naval Review<\/em>, the official journal of the United Kingdom&#8217;s Royal Navy, has favorably reviewed <em>Great Power Clashes Along the Maritime Silk Road<\/em>, written by IHI Fellow, Dr. Grant Rhode.\u00a0 According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naval-review.com\/book-reviews\/great-power-clashes-along-the-maritime-silk-road-lessons-from-history-to-shape-current-strategy\/\">the review<\/a>, Rhode\u2019s book \u201cprovides a highly interesting and informative read \u2026 It also features useful maps, charts and tables. This book will certainly appeal to anyone with an interest in the history of the Indo-Pacific region, its contemporary geopolitics, or the histories of the Ottoman Empire, India, China, Korea, or Japan.\u201d\u00a0 Dr. Rhode discussed his book on March 20, 2024 at BU; see the Events section below.<br \/>\n<hr \/>\n<\/li>\n<li>Dec. 11, 2024:\u00a0 IHI is pleased to announce the appointments of Prof. Aimee Genell, Prof. Andrei Mamolea, and Prof. Rachel Nolan, all assistant professors at the Pardee School of Global Studies, as new IHI Fellows.\u00a0 &#8220;Aimee, Andrei, and Rachel are first-rate scholars with a passion for international history.
