Social Science Summer Writing Intern, IGS

Sofia Sanchez is a Social Science Summer Writing Intern with the Boston University Institute for Global Sustainability (IGS). She is majoring in Archaeological and Environmental Sciences through the College of Arts & Sciences and minoring in Theatre Arts through the College of Fine Arts. Her academic interests lie at the intersection of culture, environment, and ethics, with a particular focus on how communities shape, and are shaped by, environmental action.

Before coming to BU, Sofia had the opportunity to work and learn on permaculture farms in Guatemala and Costa Rica. In Comalapa, she supported Long Way Home in constructing a sustainable “eco-school” using green building techniques. She also conducted independent research on NGOs around Lake Atitlán, focusing on women-led cooperatives and grassroots development.

At Boston University, Sofia has contributed to laboratory research in both botanical identification and stable isotope analysis. She has also completed research on conservation ethics in relation to non-European religious traditions. Sofia values not only practical efforts toward sustainability but also the importance of cultural inclusion, respect, and community voice in environmental work.
