Brian Sousa

Graduate Student Summer Fellow, IGS Environmental Health

Brian Sousa, a 2024 Graduate Summer Fellow at the Boston University Institute for Global Sustainability (IGS), is an MS student in the Department of Environmental Health. His interests focus on climate mitigation strategies, the impacts they have on public health, and how we can work to mitigate these impacts through an environmental justice lens. Sousa plans to use his research to contribute to the transition away from fossil fuels by providing insights into the public health impacts of various strategies and aid policymakers with the tools needed to ensure it is done equitably. Sousa holds a BS in Applied Physics from Northeastern University and is currently an MS student in Climate & Health at Boston University’s School of Public Health.

As an IGS Graduate Student Summer Fellow, he is conducting independent research evaluating the cost-effectiveness and related impacts of deploying renewable energy and carbon capture technologies in the United States. This study integrates infrastructure costs, emission reductions, health impacts, and water consumption to compare different climate mitigation strategies, aiming to provide a comprehensive analysis of methods to decarbonize the electrical grid. His faculty advisor is Jonathan Buonocore, Assistant Professor, Environmental Health, and his project title is “Cost Benefit Analysis of Greenhouse Gas Reduction Technologies and the Associated Health and Water Impacts in the United States.”
