Mayor Michelle Wu Announces Six Recipients of the 2025 Community Clean Air Grant

The City of Boston has awarded a $194,691 2025 Community Clean Air Grant to Boston University’s Clean Air, Health, and School Sustainability (CHESS) project in partnership with Boston Public Schools (BPS). This research, led by Dr. Patricia Fabian, an associate professor of environmental health and associate director at the BU Institute for Global Sustainability, will expand its research collaboration with BPS to co-design and implement an Air Pollution/Wildfire Smoke Action Plan, with the goal of reducing student and staff air pollution exposure.

In the City’s announcement, Dr. Fabian says, “High air pollution events are occurring more frequently, and children are among the most vulnerable to their effects. We’re excited to partner with Boston Public Schools to co-develop an Air Pollution Action Plan that brings together the school community, Boston University researchers, and real-time data from the district’s groundbreaking air quality sensor network.”

Dr. Fabian also spoke with The Bay State Banner, underscoring the value of this work for protecting students by providing healthy learning environments.
