Watch Now | The Role of Net Metering in the Evolving Electricity System

The National Academies held their 9th committee meeting on The Role of Net Metering in the Evolving Electricity System (November 2, 2022), part of a Congressionally-mandated study for the Department of Energy.

The committee heard from IGS Director Benjamin Sovacool about consumer behavior and equity in the electricity system. He discussed equitable considerations within net metering to further inform their understanding of the subject.

Based on original research in the UK, smart meters, which are very close to net meters in the US, “can potentially erode equity or create different types of vulnerability. Whether it’s they enable real-time pricing that then means that people who can’t shift prices are penalized, or there are real concerns over hacking and data privacy, to just confusion.” — Benjamin Sovacool
