{"id":301,"date":"2012-04-26T09:44:33","date_gmt":"2012-04-26T13:44:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/i2b2\/?page_id=301"},"modified":"2012-04-26T10:26:55","modified_gmt":"2012-04-26T14:26:55","slug":"the-i2b2-query-tab","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/i2b2\/the-home-cell\/the-i2b2-query-tab\/","title":{"rendered":"The i2b2 Query Tool"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The HOME Cell extends the functionality of the i2b2 system by allowing researchers to link concepts about patients temporally (through time) and quantifiably (through number of occurrences or values).\u00a0 However, before researchers can make use of the HOME Cell, they must first be familiar with the i2b2 Query Tool.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Generating a population in the QUERY tab for use in the HOME Cell<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>i2b2 queries are population based, which means that the number returned from the initial query is the <em>number of patients<\/em> that fulfill the criteria you assigned in the various groups.\u00a0 Each patient may <em>(and probably will)<\/em> have multiple records throughout time in the database, but the initial query will tell you how many people you have in your population.<\/p>\n<p>Example:\u00a0 Create\u00a0 Query Tool Query for patients with a Primary Care visit between 2005 and 2011, and any diagnosis (Ever) of Essential Hypertension, and at least 1 Blood Pressure between 2005 and 2011<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1: Add your concepts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The concepts (Essential Hypertension, General Medicine, Family Medicine, Geriatrics, Blood Pressure) were dragged into their groups from the Navigate Terms tab on the left.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/i2b2\/files\/2012\/04\/querytool.querydemo1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-311\" title=\"querytool.querydemo\" src=\"\/i2b2\/files\/2012\/04\/querytool.querydemo1-636x460.png\" alt=\"querytool.querydemo\" width=\"636\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/i2b2\/files\/2012\/04\/querytool.querydemo1-636x460.png 636w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/i2b2\/files\/2012\/04\/querytool.querydemo1-1024x741.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/i2b2\/files\/2012\/04\/querytool.querydemo1.png 1608w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 636px) 100vw, 636px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 2: Apply Constraints<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Constraints can be applied on the Date, the Number of Occurrences, and to Exclude a Group.<\/p>\n<p>To constraint to only patients with General Medicine, Family Medicine, Geriatrics and Blood Pressure from 2005 to 2011, the Date Constraint was applied to Group 1 and Group 3 as below:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/i2b2\/files\/2012\/04\/querytool.dateconstraints.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-309\" title=\"querytool.dateconstraints\" src=\"\/i2b2\/files\/2012\/04\/querytool.dateconstraints.png\" alt=\"querytool.dateconstraints\" width=\"430\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 3: Select\u00a0 your Analysis Type<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The most commonly used Analysis Types are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Number of Patients<\/li>\n<li>Gender Patient Breakdown<\/li>\n<li>Race Patient Breakdown<\/li>\n<li>Age Patient Breakdown<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is not recommended to select any other Analysis Type in the MHDR unless you have a specific reason to do so.\u00a0\u00a0 Specifically avoid the Patient List and Encounter List options &#8211; these create Lists of patients or patient encounters and stores them in the database.\u00a0 Since queries can have many thousands of patients, the use of these options creates lists of data that are not generally useful and will take up unnecessary space on the server.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 4:\u00a0 Run your query<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That is it &#8211; you have now created a patient population query to use as the basis for a <a title=\"HOME Cell Help\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/i2b2\/the-home-cell\/homecellhelp\/\">HOME Cell<\/a> query.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Generating a Query for a Cohort Definition &#8211; Considerations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When generating a query in the Query tab the researcher should consider:<\/p>\n<p>1)\u00a0 Is this Query being used to identify a cohort one time only today? (Cohort identification)<\/p>\n<p>2) Is this Query going to be used in conjunction with the HOME cell to identify a cohort and track them through time? (Cohort monitoring)<\/p>\n<p>These considerations may determine what constraints you want to put on your initial Query, especially in terms of date ranges.<\/p>\n<p>In the example above you restricted your query to only patients with certain concepts between 2005 and 2011.<\/p>\n<p>But\u00a0 consider if you were generating a query\u00a0to be used in conjunction with the HOME cell for monitoring people\u00a0going forward into 2012, 2013, etc.<\/p>\n<p>If that were the case, <em>then you would not want to put an Upper limit on the date constraint for the initial Query.<\/em> Otherwise you would only get patients who had the desired concepts in 2005 to 2011 and not pick up new patients who may have been in 2012 or 2013.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The HOME Cell extends the functionality of the i2b2 system by allowing researchers to link concepts about patients temporally (through time) and quantifiably (through number of occurrences or values).\u00a0 However, before researchers can make use of the HOME Cell, they must first be familiar with the i2b2 Query Tool.
