{"id":14324,"date":"2020-05-07T08:51:00","date_gmt":"2020-05-07T12:51:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/humanities\/?post_type=profile&#038;p=14324"},"modified":"2020-05-07T08:51:00","modified_gmt":"2020-05-07T12:51:00","slug":"deeana-klepper","status":"publish","type":"profile","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/humanities\/profiles\/deeana-klepper\/","title":{"rendered":"Deeana Klepper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Albert of Diessen\u2019s \u201cPriests\u2019 Miorror\u201d: Defining Religion in Late Medieval Germany<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span>My time as a BUCH Henderson Senior Research Fellow will be spent working on a book in progress entitled\u00a0<\/span><i class=\"\">Albert of Diessen\u2019s \u201cPriests\u2019 Mirror\u201d: Defining Religion in Late Medieval Germany.<\/i><span>\u00a0Organized around several versions of a late fourteenth-century Latin religious manual (The\u00a0<\/span><i class=\"\">Priests\u2019 Mirror<\/i><span>, by an Augustinian Canon Regular named Albert from the Bavarian market town of Diessen), the book brings to light a fascinating unstudied manuscript tradition worthy of exploration on its own terms and uses it to expand our understanding of religion in medieval European Christian society. Focusing on the pastoral manual as a distinctive genre of medieval religious literature, I show how purportedly universal religious ideals and laws were adapted, reinterpreted, and repurposed by those given responsibility to implement them, thereby crafting distinctive, local expressions of Christianity. Medieval parish communities are often treated in scholarship as imperfect reflections of a universal \u201ccatholic\u201d Christianity as taught in schools, universities, and the papal curia.
