The annual deadline is March 1.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Each year the Center distributes awards ranging from $1,500 to $5,000 to undergraduate students majoring in the humanities.<\/p>\n

Defining the Humanities<\/h3>

\nWork in the humanities seeks to understand human society, culture, history, and values using philosophical inquiry and\/or<\/span>
\nhistorical investigation and\/or<\/span>
\ninterpretation or analysis of cultural production (i.e. literature, visual art, music, material culture etc.)
\n<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

Eligibility & Funds<\/h3>
\n

Eligible departments may nominate two-three sophomores and\/or juniors<\/strong> annually for general awards in the humanities. While we encourage no more than three nominees, we leave open the possibility for a fourth nominee if truly merited. <\/span>Students who have won a\u00a0<\/span>general BUCH Undergraduate Student Award<\/strong>\u00a0in a prior year are\u00a0<\/span>not eligible\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>to be nominated for another. Students who have won an\u00a0<\/span>Oddy Award\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>or\u00a0<\/span>Melville Latin Prize<\/strong>\u00a0in prior years\u00a0<\/span>are eligible<\/strong>\u00a0to be nominated for a general BUCH Undergraduate Student Award. <\/span>The awards are supported by the following funds:<\/p>\n

  • The Helen G. Allen Humanities Award<\/li>\n
  • The Alice M. Brennan Humanities Award<\/li>\n
  • The Clarimond Mansfield Award<\/li>\n
  • The Angela J. & James J. Rallis Memorial Award<\/li>\n
  • The Edwin S. and Ruth M. White Prize<\/li>\n
  • The Robert E. Yellin Award<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The Department of Classical Studies nominates students for the following two awards, which have\u00a0<\/span>specific requirements.<\/u>\u00a0Students who have won an\u00a0<\/span>Oddy Award<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span>Melville Latin Prize<\/strong>\u00a0in prior years are<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>not eligible<\/strong>\u00a0to be nominated for another.<\/span><\/p>\n

    • The John Oddy Memorial Award: Undergraduate junior and senior women<\/strong> who have taken a classical history course are eligible to be nominated for this award, even if they are not Classical Studies majors.<\/li>\n
    • The Dean Elsbeth Melville Latin Prize is awarded to an outstanding undergraduate scholar of Latin who is majoring in Classical Studies.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Application Components<\/h3>
      \n
        \n
      1. General applicant info (name, email, major etc.)<\/li>\n
      2. Current unofficial<\/strong> transcript with name and BUID<\/li>\n
      3. Personal statement (two pages, double-spaced): Think of this as an\u00a0<\/span><\/span>intellectual biography, providing insight on your academic development and future goals as a student of the humanities.<\/span><\/li>\n
      4. Writing sample: One 10-15-page essay or two essays that together add up to 10-15 pages, double spaced. Please also include a bibliography.<\/li>\n
      5. Confidential letter of support from a faculty member<\/li>\n
      6. Confidential letter of support from the nominating DUS. This letter should explain the department’s rationale for your nomination.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
