{"id":16218,"date":"2021-07-20T15:57:15","date_gmt":"2021-07-20T19:57:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hr\/?page_id=16218"},"modified":"2023-06-12T16:06:24","modified_gmt":"2023-06-12T20:06:24","slug":"requesting-a-flexible-work-arrangement","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hr\/lifebu\/flexible-work\/requesting-a-flexible-work-arrangement\/","title":{"rendered":"General Request Process"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>How to Request a Flexible Work Arrangement<\/h4>\n<p><u><span>Hybrid and Fully Remote<\/span> Work Arrangements<\/u><u><span>\u00a0\u2013 Requests and Approvals<\/span><\/u><\/p>\n<p>To request <span>a <\/span>hybrid <span>or<\/span> fully remote work<span> arrangement,<\/span> a staff member must <span>submit<\/span> an online <span>Remote<\/span> Work <span>Request<\/span> Form. Managers may also require that staff members provide additional information relevant to the staff member\u2019s position, job duties, or the needs of the department.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><u><\/u><span>A hybrid or fully remote<\/span> work <span>arrangement<\/span> must be approved by the staff member\u2019s manager and the appropriate <span>dean <\/span>or <span>vice president (or a<\/span> designee of the <span>dean<\/span> or <span>vice president<\/span>). If the staff member\u2019s remote work location is outside Massachusetts, the arrangement must also be approved by the <span>vice president<\/span> for <span>human resources<\/span>, as described in Section <span>12<\/span> below.<\/p>\n<p><u><\/u><span>A hybrid or fully remote work arrangement may not begin until a Remote<\/span> Work <u><\/u><span>Request<\/span> Form<span> is complete, with<\/span> all <span>required approvals.<\/span> The staff member will complete the form which will be automatically routed to their manager for additional information and first-level approval. The form will then be routed to the appropriate <span>dean, vice president<\/span>, or designee (and for out-of-state work, the <span>vice president<\/span> for <span>human resources<\/span>) for additional approval. The completed document will be returned to the staff member and manager.<\/p>\n<p><u><span>Modified Work Schedules \u2013 Requests and Approvals<\/span><\/u><\/p>\n<p><span>To request a modified work schedule, a staff member must submit a written request to their manager identifying the proposed schedule. Staff should discuss<\/span> modified work schedules<span> with their managers before making requests.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A modified work schedule must be approved in writing by the staff member\u2019s manager. If the staff member\u2019s regular or remote work location is outside of Massachusetts<\/span>, the manager must also <span>obtain<\/span> the <span>approval of the vice president for human resources before allowing a<\/span> modified work schedule<span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>If a modified work schedule changes the number of hours a staff member works per day (e.g., a compressed work schedule of four ten-hour days), the manager must ensure that the work schedule is entered into SAP through an Employee Position Update by the department\u2019s payroll coordinator. Further detail on entering the modified work schedule into SAP is available in the \u201cUpdates During Employment\u201d section on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hr\/hr-systems\/process-and-help-guides\/\"><span>HR Systems website<\/span><\/a><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<h5>Preexisting Flexible Work Arrangements<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><span>Flexible work arrangements that were in place prior to the issuance of these Guidelines are subject to these Guidelines in all respects.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Requests for Reconsideration<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>A staff member whose request for a flexible work arrangement has been denied may request reconsideration of the decision. Requests for reconsideration must be directed to the applicable Dean or Vice President, except those concerning denials by Human Resources for flexible work arrangements outside of Massachusetts, which must be directed to the Vice President for Human Resources.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Management Discretion<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Decisions regarding flexible work arrangements, including decisions on requests for reconsideration, are at the discretion of management and are not subject to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/policies\/employee-grievance-process\/\">Employee Grievance Process in the University\u2019s Employee Handbook<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How to Request a Flexible Work Arrangement Hybrid and Fully Remote Work Arrangements\u00a0\u2013 Requests and Approvals To request a hybrid or fully remote work arrangement, a staff member must submit an online Remote Work Request Form.
