What is pet insurance?
Pet insurance functions much like other insurance policies. By paying a monthly premium, you gain coverage that helps cover both routine and unforeseen veterinary expenses for your pet.
What benefits does MetLife Pet Insurance provide?

How does MetLife Pet Insurance work?
After paying your vet bill, you may submit your claim to MetLife. You can file for reimbursement through their mobile app, online portal, email, fax, or mail. Most claims are processed within five days, and if your expense is covered, you’ll receive reimbursement7 by check or direct deposit.

When does coverage start?
Accident coverage and optional Preventive Care coverage start on your policy’s effective date, while illness coverage begins 14 days afterward.8,9

How much pet insurance do I need?
You can select a plan that fits your requirements. Choices include:
- Coverage levels ranging from $500 up to unlimited10
- Deductible options between $0 and $2,50011
- Reimbursement rates from 50% to 90%12

How much does Pet Insurance cost?
Each pet’s premium is personalized based on factors such as age, breed, location, and the coverage level you choose. MetLife Pet Insurance also provides ways to save. If you are claim free for a policy year, MetLife will automatically reduce your deductible by $50 through their Healthy Pet Incentive. Additionally, MetLife Pet offers an Automatic Policy Limit Increase13 for added peace of mind.

What discounts am I offered?
You will be automatically eligible for a 10% Employer Group Discount9/5% Affinity Group Discount14. A variety of additional discounts may be available,15 including:
- Military, Veteran, First Responder and Healthcare Workers Discount16
- Animal Care Discount17
- Multi-pet discount18 (5% for the 2nd pet policy and 10% for each additional policy)

How do I pay for my pet's coverage?
You can set up an automatic payment via credit card through the online portal or call center. ACH (electronic bank-to-bank payment) is available exclusively through the MetLife Pet Insurance call center.
Is coverage portable if I leave my employment at Boston University?
Yes. You can take your policy with you. However, if you receive an Employer Group Discount/Affinity Group Discount due to signing up for MetLife Pet Insurance through Boston University, you will no longer be eligible for that discount upon policy renewal.
What is the MetLife Pet app?
The MetLife Pet app allows you to access your pet insurance account anywhere and anytime. You can download and use the app easily to:
